The well-known intro theme to the PBS series "Masterpiece Theater"--does
anyone know who wrote this piece? Was it by a famous composer? It sounds
like it could be something from one of the baroque composers such as Handel,
or perhaps Purcell.

thanks for any info

The original recording was taken from a Nonesuch LP called "Symphonies and
Fanfares for the King's Supper." The piece is a Rondeau, and the composer
Mouret. Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but if you're going to look for it,
you'll need the correct spellings.

No, it's a rondo by Mouré, I think.

I think the composer's full name was Jean-Joseph Mouret.

It ought not to be that hard to find good recordings of it. It is
pretty standard fare at weddings, arranged for piccolo trumpet and
organ.

NAXOS has a collection of Wedding Favorites, featuring the entire Mouret
suite, among other common wedding selections, such as from Wagner,
Mendelssohn, et. al.
