A password reset disk allows you to access your account on a local computer by resetting the password in the event that the password is forgotten. When you create the password reset disk, it allows you to reset your password no matter how many times you have changed the password.

Note:

If you are already locked out of your system, you are not able to use this process. For more information on resetting your password, visit the following Microsoft web site: How to use System Restore to log on to Windows Vista when you lose access to an account.

If you use a local account in Window 11, you should create a password reset disk using a USB flash drive as soon as possible. Then, if you forget your password, you can reset it. If you wait until you've forgotten your password, it'll be too late. We recommend you add security questions to your local account in case you forget your password, so you don't need to create a password reset disk. To do this, select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Update your security questions.

On Windows 10, forgetting a password and the security questions can be one of the more frustrating things to deal with, and if you're unlucky enough to have forgotten the account password, you may be cursing to the heavens. The good news is you can avoid this by creating a password reset disk.

A password reset disk is a file you create on a USB drive, allowing you to reset your password from the Sign-in screen. The best part about the password reset disk is you only have to create it once, and it will work forever, no matter how many times you use it.

If you forget your Windows password, you can use a password reset disk to create a new one. We recommend that you create a password reset disk when you create your password, so you don't lose access to your files and information.

If the local account password is lost/forgotten, and a password reset disk is not available, reinstalling the operating system is the next best solution. For information on reinstalling Windows, refer to SLN291833

To create a Password Reset Disk using a floppy disk or USB flash drive, refer to Microsoft Support article, Creating a Password Reset Disk in Microsoft Windows 7. The instructions for Vista and Windows 7 are identical.

In the same server I had one more sata connector so I am using that and trying to "reset" or "format" the original drive or the spare.. but the format option does not illuminate (it is disabled) offline option doesn't take off line but I can toggle from dynamic disk and static disk...

The Reset-PhysicalDisk cmdlet resets the status of a physical disk. For Storage spaces, this is a destructive operation that removes the Storage pool configuration and pool data from the specified physical disk.

If you run Reset-PhysicalDisk on a physical disk that appears as lost communication or split, this cmdlet attempts to re-integrate the disk into the Storage pool if the disk is discoverable. After you reset a physical disk, use Repair-VirtualDisk to restore its resiliency.

Plug a USB flash drive into your PC. Although creating a password reset disk won't reformat your USB flash drive, you should back up any data on it before you continue. It is recommended to use the USB flash drive for this purpose only.

I made a password reset 'disk' on a USB thumb drive (wanted to use a CD for better convenience and reliability but it appears this is no longer permitted - pretty sure it was an option in Windows 7 - even though the use of a floppy disk is still supported ... go figure). This use of a pre-cooked reset disk seemed to be the only way (and I have done a lot of Googling on this) for the user of a local account to change their password (whether because it is forgotten or simply because they elect to make the change) on a Windows 10 (and earlier perhaps) system without losing various user data associated with the existing credentials, as would happen if, for example, an administrator reset the particular user's password.

Anyway ... the reset 'disk' appears to be just a couple of files in the root of the thumb drive volume, one called "userkey.psw" and the other ".device_info_e7f7f2a9-2 ... [long alphanumeric string] ". I plan to copy these files elsewhere as a backup in case the thumb drive is lost/fails/etc, since if the user were to forget their password then a reset disk cannot simply be created anew as doing so requires the particular user to be logged on to the system. Note that the ".device_info_ ..." file is not a regular file: it is 0 KB and has no creation nor modification date; it might be just an entry in the file table for the purpose of recording the information that is present in its name.

That's it. Now you know how to create a password reset disk and recover your password. Remember that the password reset disk only works for local accounts (not domain accounts). Also, if you use the password reset disk, you can use the same disk again in the future without the need to update it.

If you don't have a password reset disk but need to recover your password, try installing Parted Magic onto a USB flash drive and using the chntpw tool. It's not as elegant as the password reset disk, but it beats reinstalling Windows.

When people forget their Windows password and can't log on to their computer, they regret not having created a password reset disk beforehand. So people wish there were a way to make a password reset disk for another computer. If so, they don't have to get worried when they forget Windows password and have no password reset disk. Actually, it is possible to realize that. Now this page will explain how to do it.

Tips: iSumsoft Windows Password Refixer makes it easy to create a password reset disk for another computer, but if you have spare removable media, such as a USB flash drive, you are still recommended to make a password reset disk in advance using the Forgotten Password Wizard with Windows itself, just in case you forget your computer password. However, such a reset disk can only reset password for that user account on that computer. It doesn't work for another user account or another computer.

Hirens Boot CD is bad ass, it has tools for everything! I always keep a copy of it handy in case someone needs a password reset, or a BIOS password reset. http:/ Opens a new window/www.hirensbootcd.org/download

A password reset disk allows you to reset your Windows local password if you ever forget it. However, you're unable to create a password reset disk if you don't know your password, so don't wait for the day you actually need it. Go ahead and create it when you initially set up your user account. This article will walk you through the steps to create a password reset disk in Windows 10.

That's it. The next time you forgot the admin password, you can reset Windows 10 password easily with a previously created password-reset disk. If you don't have a password reset disk but need to recover your password, try the PCUnlocker program to unlock your Windows local/Microsoft account.

I forgot my administrator password on my windows 8. I went to Microsoft account and changed password there, but I still get the wrong password message. I've tried this several times, and no joy. Finally, i used passcue for Windows software to create a reset disk, then reset the password successfully.

Step 3: Replace the Utility Manager (utilman.exe) program on Windows 10 logon screen with the Command Prompt (cmd.exe), so you can open Command Prompt from the logon screen and then reset your administrator password.

I burned this iso file to a USB, start my computer from it and I got into the desktop. But I cannot do any further steps to reset my administrator password. I can open the Control Panel and Command, but I cannot reset my password with either of them. Please help!

I wanted to have a feel of ubuntu so I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on windows 7 using a USB stick to boot. But I made a horrifying mistake of not installing ubuntu on a separate partiton. This resulted in removing my windows 7 completely from my laptop along with the previous partitions. Now all I have are two linux filesystem partions : one swap and one for every thing else.

Type in your current password and choose Next again. After a few seconds, your disk is created. Store it somewhere safe, away from cats who think that USB drives are great kitty toys.

Windows 10 begs you to sign into a Microsoft account, and for good reason. Aside from enabling you to download apps from its store and synchronize settings from one PC to another, a Microsoft account also offers you an easy way to reset your password, as you saw above.

If none of the above methods work, then the last remaining option is to wipe your entire disk and reinstall Windows. Windows 10 and 11 make this easy by offering a reset option. To do that, click on the Power button on your login screen, select Restart, and hold down the Shift key. Go to Troubleshoot Reset this PC, and select Remove everything!

All versions of Windows, including Windows 10, have a built-in feature that allows you to reset your local account password using a USB drive. This requires you to create a password reset disk for your account on a USB drive before you forget your password.

You can also reset your Windows 10 password with a Windows USB installation disk. By booting your locked PC from a USB installation disk, you will be able to reset your Windows 10 password with Command Prompt. This would be a good option if you prefer to reset your Windows 10 password manually instead of using any third-party software.
