Fritz Reiner -- RCA/BMG has released a lot of Reiner's stereo performances,
despite the fact the sound varies considerably and shows deterioration in some
cases (i.e., Song of the Nightingale). I'd like to know when they're going to
get around to release other items of his such as the Liebermann Concerto for
Jazz Band and Orchestra (which I think once appeared on a bootleg album in true
stereo -- perhaps taken from a reel-to-reel tape?), the Eroica (RCA LM-1899),
Mozart Divertimento No. 17 and Eine kleine Nachtmusik (RCA LM-1966) and The
Isle of the Dead. I wouldn't complain if Columbia/CBS/Sony or whatever released
some of his Pittsburgh symphony recordings.
Glenn Gould -- considering he's been dead for 9 years, CBS/Sony is really
taking their time about re-issuing much of his material and not doing a
particular good job with the ones they have released (though they haven't come
close to the disc and cassette recordings of the early Beethoven Sonatas and
some of the volumes in the Glenn Gould legacy where pieces were broken between
albums or tapes). The Beethoven and Mozart Sonata recordings were issued on the
cheapo Maestro and Odyssey labels with no documentation whatsoever. The Art of
Fugue on the organ was issued twice, once on a single CD with the Handel
harpsichord music, the other in one of the multi-disc Bach sets. Sony in Japan
has released everything they can get their hands on, including GG's silver
anniversary album, containing a bizarre radio documentary and GG accompanying
Elizabeth Schwarzkopf in some Strauss lieder.
Messiaen's Visions de L'Amen played by Peter Serkin and Yuji Takahashi, which
was released by RCA on disc in one of their famous Dyna-Warp pressings, and on
cassette without any Dolby noise reduction. This would benefit greatly from
being released on CD, and there is plenty of solo Messiaen piano music played
by Serkin on RCA to fill it up.
Finally, did anyone get the multi-CD Stravinsky box set? According to the
review in the Gramophone, some tidbits were left out, but I'm wondering if
they're included on the "sampler" album.
