Which Koechel Catalogue is this?
Oh. I thought it was a Koechel Catalogue. But then, you misrepresented
Zaslaw's work before; the Compleat Mozart's criteria for inclusion in
the database have no claim on "how we should define works" or anything
like that. Zaslaw made decisions for a particular purpose: a
performance
series at Lincoln Center. (I still want to know how the count gets
up to 800.)
Now, where's that tally of yours?

Mozart's Works and the
The Secrets of the Koechel Catalogue
Part I: Introduction and 'Questions and Answers'
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A Brief Introduction to the Koechel Catalogue, by Neal Zaslaw
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sir Ludwig von Koechel's "Chronological-Thematic Catalogue of the
Complete Works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart" was published in 1862 (K1).
In it were listed all of Mozart's works known to Koechel in what he
understood to be their chronological order, from number 1(infant
harpsicord piece) to 626 (the Requiem). The second edition of the
Catalogue, prepared by Count Paul von Waldersee in 1905, involved
for the most part minor additions, corrections, and clarifications,
many of them collected by Koechel himself before his death (K2).
The first thoroughgoing revision was the third edition, completed
by Alfred Einstein in 1936 (K3). Einstein adjusted the position
of many works in Koechel's chronology, threw out as spurious some
works Koechel had taken to be genuine, and added as authentic some
works Koechel had believed spurious or not known about. He also
inserted into the chronological scheme a considerable number of
fragmentary and lost works, which Koechel had placed in an appendix
(Anhang) without chronological order. Although many of Mozart's works
were thus redated, Koechel's original numbers could not be dropped or
reassigned, for they formed the basis for innumerable editions, concert
programs, library catalogues, and reference works. Einstein therefore
extended a method already established by Waldersee in K2 for a handful
of works: he inserted new numbers between old ones by adding lower-case
letters. Thus, for instance, Koechel had given the date 1780 to the
Six Variations in B-flat major on "Helas, j'ai perdu mon amant" for
violin and piano and assigned it the listing 360. Einstein suspected
that this work was more likely to have originated in June 1781 and
assigned it the new listing K. 374b, as one of a group of seven works
that he inserted between K. 374 and K. 375. Now the work bears both
numbers.
The third edition of the Koechel Catalogue was reprinted with an
extensive supplement of corrections and additions in 1946 and is
usually identified as K3a. So-called fourth and fifth editions were
nothing more than unchanged reprints of the 1936 edition, without
the 1946 supplement. The sixth and current edition, which appeared
in 1964 edited by Franz Giegling, Alexander Weinmann, and Gerd
Sievers (K6), continued Einstein's innovations by adding even more
numbers with lower-case letters appended, and a few with upper-case
letters as well (for instance, the Symphony in G minor, K.183=173dB),
when a work had to be inserted into the chronology between two of
Einstein's lower-case insertions. So-called seventh and eighth
editions are merely unchanged reprints of the sixth. This history
of the various revisions of the Koechel Catalogue explains why many
of Mozart's works bear two "K" numbers and a few three, such as the
Symphony in B-flat major, K.182=166c=173dA.
In "The Compleat Mozart" Koechel listings are given, when these exist,
from K1 and from K6. The majority of listings in K6 have been taken
over unchanged from K3, but where changes have been made, the K3
listing has also been added.
The chronological arrangements of Mozart's works in the Koechel
Catalogue has had both beneficial and unfortunate effects on our
understanding of the composer's life and works. The availability of
such a detailed chronology, lacking for many other composers, has
encouraged careful study of Mozart's day-to-day activities and of his
month-by-month artistic development. But these seemingly concrete
dates have all too often proven unreliable, as can be seen by the
number of works that have been renumbered in subsequent editions of the
Koechel Catalogue. Writers, taken in by the Catalogue's firm dates,
have often made bold statements based upon flimsy evidence. Indeed,
the very nature of the Koechel Catalogue engenders speculative
behavior on the part of otherwise cautious scholars, for as the
Catalogue is chronological, a work cannot be entered into it without
attempting to date that work, whether or not adequate grounds for such
dating exist.-----end
Q. Do Koechel numbers, like the opus numbers in Chopin's list of works,
each represent one work?
A. No and No. Neither the Koechel numbers in the Koechel Catalogue
nor the opus numbers in Chopin's list of works _necessarily_
represent one individual work. For instance, no educated
professional pianist would consider the three Op.9 nocturnes
of Chopin to be a "work", even though the word "opus" means "work".
But this is not to say that many people wouldn't refer to them
as such very loosely...but to do so would be incorrect under
formal circumstances. Indeed, many scholars even, often simply
refer to everything under an opus number or a Koechel number
as a work without thinking twice. To call something such
as the K.A109b "London Notebook" a 'work' would be purely
illogical. It is a book of staff paper containing 40 complete
compositions. To call the K.A229 'Five Divertimentos for Winds'
a work would also be illogical, in spite of any common sciolistic
appelation. If each of these divertimentos were played from
beginning to end without pause the total timing of performance
would be comparable to the amount of time it takes to perform
the first seven of Mozart's symphonies. Also consider the fact
that sets of Chopin's works, like the 24 Op.28 preludes, are often
referred to as "works", and at the same time the preludes within
are also referred to as "works" in texts. But are we to consider
such a set of 24 as a "work" and at the same time call another
lonesome prelude off by itself under another opus a number a "work"
as well? The answer, of course, is that each prelude in itself
is a miniature and self-contained work and that's the way it must
be counted for logic's sake.
Q. Ok. But what exactly _is_ a work? I thought works had to
be big, like a symphony or an opera or a sonata.
A. No. Compositions do not have to be large to be considered
a "work". Any composition believed to be complete in itself
and independent is a "work". As it says in the Dictionary of
Music, "A Mozart work may range in size from a dance of a few
measures to a full-length opera."
Q. If that's true, what exactly does the number _626_ mean?
Is this not the number of works?
A. No, it isn't. This is simply the number of Koechel numbers.
(See above.) If another scholar besides Koechel were to have
written a catalogue of works in 1862, the chances of him
arriving at the number 626 would be infinitesimal. This
number reflects the way Mozart had his compositions published,
the way Koechel grouped the works for convenience, etc.....
It is a myth that the individual numbers in a thematic catalogue
are there to spell-out what individual works are. Works composed
and published in sets are placed under one opus/Koechel number
for obvious reasons.
Q. Ok. I know what a work is now. But what about all those
fragments, spurious works, doubtful works etc...
What exactly should we count in a list of "Mozart's works"?
A. (from the Compleat Mozart, by Neal Zaslaw- editor of the New Koechel)
"The fist problem was to define 'all' in the phrase 'all of
Mozart's music,' for in addition to the large number of
unquestionably genuine works by Mozart, there are many others
whose status remains uncertain. The latter category includes
works lacking authentic sources whose attribution to Mozart may
be questioned; works that Mozart never completed; additional
versions of works that exist in two or more authentic versions;
recently discovered works whose provenance has yet to be clarified;
and works of other composers arranged by Mozart. To deal with
these and other germane matters, I worked with Fiona Morgan Fein,
who has been appointed to coordinate the Mozart Bicentennial at
Lincoln Center.
The result of our efforts was the 'Mozart Bicentennial at Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts: Repertoire Database,' which,
because it drew on the latest research, is more up-todate than
comparable lists found in such standard references as the sixth
edition of the Koechel Catalogue, the 'New Grove Dictionary of
Music and Musicians', and the new complete works edition (Neue
Mozart-Ausgabe).
The trickiest aspect of creating the "Mozart Database" was
deciding which pieces to include. After considerable discussion
and some trial and error, the following guidelines were established:
in addition to the unquestionably genuine works we would include
(1) incomplete works with completed movements(for instance, the
unfinished opera 'L'oca del Cairo, K.422, with its seven completed
numbers); (2) fragmentary works completed soon after Mozart's death
by former pupils or other members of his immediate circle (which
meant that we did not have to exclude the Requiem!); (3) recently
discovered works of uncertain status(the Symphony in A minor, K.16a,
was eliminated as probably spurious, but the wind octet arrangement
was included on grounds that a shrewd case had been made for the
possibility of its genuineness); (4) second and third versions of
Mozart's works made by Mozart himself.
Excluded from the canon were questionable and spurious works and
Mozart's arrangements of other composers' works(including such
items as his reorchestration of Handel's Messiah). The only
exceptions to the last category were the seven early pastiche
concertos for keyboard and chamber ensemble, K.37,39,40,41, and
107, based on movements of keyboard sonatas from the 1760s by
J.C. Bach and others; these were included on the ground that
they are not merely mechanical arrangements or orchestrations,
but new compositions in a genre different from their models.
The total number of Mozart's compositions accordings to this
way of reckoning (but not counting authentic second versions
proves to be more than 800." ----end
Q. So that means any tally like say, 624, would have to
be entirely incorrect, right?
A. You bet. :-)
Q. But how far over 800 is it exactly?
A. That's what I'll attempt to explain in the subsequent
parts of "The Secrets of the Koechel Catalogue."
As you can see, the conditions mentioned above
are an elaboration on the problem of how many existing,
authentic Mozart works there are. But to answer the
question of 'How many works did Mozart write during his
lifetime' requires a bit more diligence. One would have
to include a logical estimate for lost works...and this
too will be commented on. It is also important to note
that it is impossible to arrive at any precise number
as questions of "what is a work" span well-beyond even
the exhaustive conditions mentioned above. Thus,
the matter is open to debate, but only to a certain extent.
