WQRS-FM in Birmingham, MI went off the air today after more than 30 years of
bringing classical music to the Detroit area. They were replaced at 5:00 PM
today EST by an alternative rock station.

Just wanted to let everyone know that it is a sad day for classical music
lovers in southeast Michigan.

Time to start sending your congressman money and letting the FCC know how the
station is "serving the public interest" with their new format at license
renewal time.

You forget which party controls the FFC's purse strings. $$$ talks, and
they bow down even more than Democrats.

Oily William & Co. don't care where the money comes from. If you got together
a "Save Classical Music" PAC you could probably get the problem fixed for
$50,000.

Sorry, too late; Congress and its friends on Wall Street changed the law
last year, and license renewals may not be challenged unless there has
been a gross violation of Federal law or FCC rules and regulations.

Who do I send a check to? Actually, it is last year's telecommunications
bill that allows a few owners to gobble up all availalbe frequencies in a
market. Clinton vetoed the first version and signed the second. Which
one was worse?

Bottom line seems to be that the future of Classical Music seems to be in
commercializing the stations that carry it. A station in southeast Florida, WTMI, is a
prime example of one that has continued to thrive and do well in spite of the changes in
listening habits, etc. of the people in the region. Most of the commercials seem to
appeal to mostly above average income people with plenty of free money to spend on
jewelry and expensive cars. If that's what it takes, so be it. I would rather have a
station to listen to with commercials than nothing at all. Classical music can survive
quite well with commercials. Radio is mostly commercials anymore. Just listen to any
other format and you will be lucky to go more than 8-10 minutes without commercial
interruptions.

Cheers!

Joe

We've had exactly the type of commercials you are talking about in San
Francisco for many years. That has not prevented the recent "dumbing down"
and termination of a good portion of the staff of KDFC here.

Well, say.............

Did ya know that WQRS and WTMI had the same owner?

Maybe Miami will be next?

Or are there too many people, demographically speaking, to keep WTMI on the
air?

Speaking of population and markets did you know that Wayne County, which
Detroit is a part of, is one of the fastest declining counties as far as
population in the United States. I'm sure Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach county
are all growing at an above average rate (WTMI listening area).
