My favourite is Victoria de los Angeles on EMI. This is a late 50's -
early 60's recording with Tito Gobbi as Schicchi conducted by
Gabriele Santini.
My least favourite (flame-retardant clothing donned) is Dame Kiri
Te Kanawa. Personally, it does have the gentleness of de los Angeles.

My personal favorite is the rendition by Monserrat Caballe on her 1971
Puccini Arias disk conducted by Charles Mackerras (which EMI hopefully
hasn't gotten around to deleting yet).
I don't know a more lusciously sung account than Leontyne Price's, which
you can catch on the RCA disc "Puccini Heroines."

I know for a fact they haven't, because I just bought it for my wife
as a birthday present. (I'm not overly fond of Puccini, but even I
think it's a beautiful record.)

The wierd part of it is that two the other artist performing on the disk
are Caballe and Freni, both of which have excellent recordings of this
aria.

Yes, and with that *fabulous* Italian diction that gives, among other
things, the solecism "o mia babbina cara."
Caballe all the way!
1. Is there a separate single CD that has the opera that contains this piece?
2. Which CD of this opera is recommended?
Thanks in advance!

There is at least one other recording (on LP) which is very good. I have
it at home, will give more details when I get them.

There is also an LP on Columbia, with Gobbi and Cotrubas. A great recording,
really captures the humor and character acting of the work. I don't know
whether it has been reissued onto CD, however.
the performance is conducted by rahbarri and has former naxos
stars (the term stars will i'm sure be debated) miriam gauci
and eduard tumagian. i recently picked this disc up for a
pleasantly low price of $4 and i think it is rather good.
however, i am not the best critic of opera as it takes a lot
to offend me. for such a low price, i'd say it's worth taking
a gamble on it. as is the case with naxos operas, there is no
translated libretto, only an italian libretto and a track-by-
track summary of the plot. this poses no problem for anyone
who had either french or spanish in high school (not to mention
italian), as you can follow along in the libretto fairly easily
if you know more or less what's happening.
in case anyone is wondering why naxos or discover do not include
translated librettos, it is because most librettos are public
domain and no royalties must be paid to publish them. however,
any translation made after 1915 is subject to royalties (and
any translations from before that may not be public domain since
there may be no way to verify that they were translated that long
ago... without proof, any italian scholar could claim to have
made the translation).

It has, but I'm afraid I don't have the number off hand. I think it has only
been rereleased as part of a complete Trittico though.
Try Te Kanawa's collection of Puccini and Verdi arias, Pritchard leading.
I belive "O mio babbino ca and ro" "Sogno di Doretta appear in the movie
soundtrack for "A Room with a View." I watched this insipid movie all the
way through just to get the credits for those two arias.

It's available seperately with the number (EURODISC) 7751-2-RC.
