Does anyone know the name of the piece composed by Bela Bartok that was
used in the opening credits of the movie "The Shining." The film was
released in 1980 and starred Jack Nicholson.

The beginning of the of The Shining?
In the beginning of the movie as I recall there was no Bartok. As I
recall it was some composition that used the Dies Irae, but not widely
known.

The main Bartok work in the Shining was the Music for Strings, Percussion,
and Celeste.

No help, I know. I'm sorry

I pulled out my copy of The Shining. The credits list Bela Bartok with his
work named (as noted in the previous message), but the other composers are
credited by name only: Krzysztof Penderecki, Wendy Carlos & Rachel Elkind,
and Gyorgy Ligeti.

I would guess that the music at the beginning with the Dies Irae is by
Penderecki, but don't know which of his pieces it is.

The opening theme was a "Switched-On Dies Irae" by Wendy Carlos.
Bartok's MUSPAC was used later in the film.

I have the old soundtrack on LP. I recently came across some rumors
that it will soon be released on CD. Check it out on the
rec.music.movies NG.

Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste was used in the film but
I dont know if it was in the opening credits. The first music I remember
is played while the Torrances are driving up the mountain road and the
music is an electronic arrangement by Wendy Carlos that features the Dies
Irae
