It seems this idea is a little more difficult than classical music in pop
songs. I'm not ready to give up yet. Following is the short list of
music I have to date. Can you clarify or add to it? Our station would
like to create an entire show of classical music used in commercials.

As always, I appreciate the help.

JILL

Composer-Selection/Commercial

Beethoven Choral Fantasy/insurance company (which one?)
Beethoven Symphony No. 9, 3rd mvmt/Buy Her Diamonds (wife hangs "do not
disturb" sign on hotel door)
Beethoven Symphony No. 9, snippets/NBA I Love This Game
Bernstein Overture to West Side Story/Ban Deoderant
Brahms Symphony No. 3, 3rd mvmt/Lexus?
Bruch Violin Concerto, opening/Champion Sportswear
Simon Jeffes/Perpetual Motion/IBM
Karl Jenkins-Shadows/DeBeers Diamonds
Pachabel Canon D/GE Light Bulbs
Rossini Barber of Seville Overture/Visa Gold (Olympic Season) also
Olive Garden

Others that need more clarification:
Flower Duet from Lakme/British Airlines
Volvo commercial used Sweeter Music from Cambridge Singers Christmas CD

Miscellaneous:
Marines Chessboard commercial inspired by Carmina Burana but written by
jingle writers

Dow Bathroom Cleaner regularly used Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain
while the little animated scrub brushes scoured the tub and sink. "We do
the work so you don't have toooooooooooooo...."

I don't know if you're interested in one that's *real old*,
but the original Ultra-Brite Toothpaste jingle (c. 1968!!) was
based on the song "Ein Juengling Liebt' ein Maedchen", from Schumann's
_Dichterliebe_.

HBO for a while used the end section of "Fortune, Empress of the World"
from Carmina Burana under a pastiche of clips from action movies in a
series of promos a couple of years back.

Kind of funny, in fact, to note the contradiction of macho costumed men
swinging swords and eviscerating people to rousing music accompanying
Latin words that translate roughly as "This very hour/Fails my power;/My
pulse beats on the wane."

Cheers.

If I'm not mistaken the theme used in the Aurora commercial is that of the
Quaker song Simple Gifts. The theme is also used in Appalachian Spring.

Dean Whittier, isn' that the name? And I think they deal with all kinds
of investments, not just insurance.

But the list here is missing that classic of classic commercials, with the
shortest classical music quote in commercial history: Vanquish. :-)

The Beethoven Chorale Fantasy is used by Dean Witter (sp?); they
usually advertise on those Sunday morning gabfest shows with the suits.

Tonight I heard the second mvmt. of Symphonie Fantastique being used to
sell body lotion. Neat, a depiction of a drug-induced hallucination
used to push beauty potions.

You'll also hear Copland's setting of "Tis a gift..." in several ads
(although you'll also hear several muzak versions). Sorry I can't think
of any specific ones at the moment.

Copland's "Appalchian Spring" is used in the Aurora car commercials, and
I think his "Rodeo" is used in the "Beef, It's What for Dinner" ones.

I heard Wagner's Tannhauser overture during one of those Superbowl beer
ads that only runs once and is never used again.

I've started hearing Beethoven's Pastorale Symph. in some ads but I can't
place it.

Wasn't a portion of "Dance of the Hourse" from "La Gioconda" used in a
toothpaste commercial as well? This goes back a few years, though.

Also, I remember hearing the 4th movement of Beethoven's 6th Symphony
used in a Cadbury's hot chocolate commercial as well.

Honda used some classical music as well a few years ago, but I'm darned
if I can remember what it was. (See what watching PBS does to you? :-))

This really doesn't fit. It is a pastiche, written specifically for the
commercial. The whole thing is less than four minutes long.

For a while the Egoiste (perfume?) commercials featured "The Dance of the
Montagues and Capulets" [sp?] from Prokoviev's Romeo and Juliet.

Beef commercial: Copland Rodeo
Pork commercial: (I just saw it, I can't remember it completely. I believe
it was a Beethoven symphony (although my memory is failing).
Look for it.)

I seem to recall hearing the finale to Prokofiev's Classical Symphony
in a van commercial, I can't remember which. I also remember hearing
the final movement of Brandenberg Concerto No. 6 in a commercial with
a woman in it, but I can't remember what she was selling.

As an update, following is the list of classical music in commercials I
have to date. Please remember, I am just *compiling* the data. Some
items are on the list only because people kept asking about them; i.e.,
the DeBeers Diamond commercial music. I've left this information on
merely as a convenience.

If you've missed this thread, I work at a classical music station
interested in presenting music in the most entertaining way possible.
We're looking for any classical music used in commercials. How old or
how current is not an issue. Please send your suggestions to me either
privately or post them for the whole group. Thanks again for all the
help to date.
