Hello, I recently got into a discussion with a kafir and they're not convinced by the moon splitting metioned in the Qur'an 59:1, I was wondering, are there any non-muslim sources to confirm the moon splitting? I heard there are some sources in Arabia but it would be preferable if the sources of the sighting of the moon split were outside of Arabia. Thank you.

"When the Moon Split" is a biography of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It provides a detailed account of the life of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, starting from his birth in Makkah to his death in Madinah. The title of the book, "When the Moon Split," is metaphorical and refers to the miraculous event in Islamic tradition where the moon is said to have split into two halves by the Prophet's PBUH supplication.

One of the miracles of Prophet Muhammad was splitting the moon at the request of the polytheists of Mecca. Almost all Muslim historians and traditionists have agreed upon this event. In addition, there is a verse of the Quran that mentions the splitting of the moon. In this article on Islam4u, we will look at this particular event and the discussions about it.

Every prophet has a miracle that they use to prove that they are indeed prophets that Allah has sent to their people. The polytheists of Mecca requested the splitting of the moon from the Noble Prophet (s) because they believed that magic or sorcery could only affect worldly phenomena and not celestial bodies. Therefore, they asked Prophet Muhammad to split the moon as a miracle to prove his prophethood. The Prophet then split the moon by pointing his finger at it and then brought it back together. God revealed the first three verses of Surah Qamar recounting this incident:

Few scholars have said that the splitting of the moon has to do with the events shortly before the Day of Judgment. However, even by looking at the verses that God has revealed concerning this event, we can easily refute such a claim. First of all, the verse uses the past tense to describe this event. If it were to happen in the future, the verb must have been in the present or future tense. Second, the second verse of Surah Qamar says that when they (i.e., the polytheists living at the time of the Prophet) see a miracle, they turn away and say it is magic.

The greatest miracle of the Noble Prophet of Islam (s) is the Noble Quran. However, this does not mean that it was his only miracle, as he had other miracles. One of the most well-known miracles of the Prophet (s) other than the Quran was the splitting of the moon. As per the request of the people of his time, he split the moon by pointing his finger at it, and then brought it back together with a gesture. Consequently, Allah revealed the first few verses of Surah Qamar relating this event. We as Muslims must accept Prophet Muhammad and follow his commands, especially when his prophethood is proven through his miracles, one of the greatest of them being the splitting of the moon.

The signs that prove the prophecy of Muhammad, are numerous. Many books have been written to enumerate them and thoroughly discuss them. We would like to mention some of these signs as reported by Muslim scholars and which prove that Muhammad was a real Prophet including:

First, his good biography and high morals as well as the noble qualities that distinguished him. He was known before becoming a Prophet as a truthful and honest person, although the community where he lived was a society of ignorance. This was, perhaps, the most important sign of his prophecy. He was not known to have ever lied on people. So, why should he lie on behalf of the Lord by claiming that he was a Prophet, if he was not a real Prophet?

Second, the powers and triumphs Allah gave him and the spread of the religion he preached, as well as the triumph of this religion over all existing religions in a short period of time. Had he been a liar, Allah would have humiliated and destroyed him as He did with those before him who falsely claimed Prophethood.

Third, the miracles Allah gave him as supporting evidence were beyond the ability of human beings and were beyond range of natural phenomena. The moon split for him, water gushed from his fingers, food became more abundant in his hands, and similar phenomena were authentically reported and happened in a way that could not be denied.

The book in our hands explains and lists the miracle of the splitting of the moon in all its details for everyone who wanted to know more about this miracle that has been proven true in all the books of the Prophet's biography.

Apologists for Islam usually say the primary miracle that proves the truth of their religion is the unique literary quality of the Quran. But others offer additional miracles allegedly performed by Muhammad, the founder of Islam. An example of one such claim is in a video put out by Muslim apologist Sheik Uthman: that Muhammad split the moon in two and that several witnesses, including non-Muslims, saw it.

The holy month of Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitr which is a holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world to mark the end of the sunset-to-dawn fasting of Ramadan. The festivities start with a morning prayer followed by family gatherings and sharing of food and gifts with neighbors and the local communities. It is important for physicians and ED clinicians to know that some Muslims may elect to observe six days of fasting after the day of Eid al-Fitr. In Islamic traditions, these six days of fasting along with the Ramadan fast are equivalent to fasting all year. In Islam, every good deed is rewarded 10 times, hence fasting 30 days of Ramadan and 6 days during the following month (Shawwal) is equivalent to a whole year fast. Many Muslims religiously follow this practice throughout their lifetimes. Some Muslims will follow the tradition (or Sunna) of the prophet Muhammad by fasting on Mondays and Thursdays every week. Therefore, physicians could care for a fasting patient throughout the year, beyond Ramadan, and should have an understanding of the religious and cultural context of the Muslim traditions when caring for these patients in the ED.

There were scientific discoveries as well. On Nov. 11, 1572, soon after sunset, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe sighted an intensely bright object in the constellation Cassiopeia that he realized had not been there before. Brahe was the first person to prove that such novae lay beyond the orbit of the moon, within the celestial realm. Brahe had discovered an exploding star, and his discovery exploded the centuries-old belief that the stars were eternal and constant. The divine perfection of the heavens was further questioned when the Italian physicist Galileo turned his new telescope to the moon in 1610 and found the surface "to be not smooth, even, and perfectly spherical, as the great crowd of philosophers have believed about this and other heavenly bodies, but, on the contrary, to be uneven, rough and crowded with depressions and bulges."
