What do the people who saw the finals think? Opinions?

Just for interest's sake - does the Leeds competition also have a
'People's Choice' award? If so, who won it, and who won each of the
categories, if it's run that way?

Here's a quote from the Leeds City Council homepage:

most votes from viewers and listeners who followed the competition on BBC

Roberto Cominati came 3rd (or 4th?) in the Sydney International piano competition,
1996.
I think he also won a prize for best interpretation of Debussy or some thing similar.
He played a Debussy nocturne beautifully (and I don't use that term loosely) at the
prize winners' concert.

This occurred a couple of months ago and I was going to post something with regard to
this competition, especially since I had some reservations re: the choices etc..and
never got around to doing it. It is interesting to compare the different pianists who
are in the competition circuit around the world ..do people think any of them
are potential concert artists etc.

This info. is off the top of my head so please excuse some of the inaccurate facts and
spelling.

People's choice in Sydney was Yuki Takao (spelling?).. Japan who came 2nd, 17 years
old. I found his playing too brash at the start but he improved dramatically, as he
went along and I was converted. It was his first piano competition.

P.S VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION
My mother wants to know if Cristiano Burato - Italy took part.

Will post something up re: the Sydney International piano competition in the
future when I find the time. I am very curious to know what people think re:
the choices made etc. and how these pianists play etc. in other competitions.

Roberto Cominati won 3rd prize at the Sydney International piano competition 1996.
He played 2 Debussy preludes beautifully (I don't use that term loosely) at the prize
winners' concert. I was also very impressed by the way he played the 3rd(?) movement of
the Carl Vine piano sonata.

Yuki Takao (18 years old)- Japan was the people's choice at the Sydney International
piano competition. At the start I found his playing too brash but he rapidly improved
through the course of the competition and I was converted. I could almost say that he
was outstanding-with the right guidance he has a good future-hope he doesn't get stuck
in the competition circuit.

Two members of my family, my mother and my aunt thought Cristiano Burato-Italy (same
teacher as Cominati) was very impressive (won 4th prize at the Sydney Piano competition
inspite of a mishap where he forgot to repeat a section in a Mozart piano concerto and
he and the Orchestra had to stop).
They were impressed by him from the very start and commented that they thought
he was good enough to start recording.
Did he take part in the Leed's piano competition or has he taken part in any other ..
and what do people think about him?
I found his interpretation of Chopin impressive. Apart from this I cannot comment
since I didn't hear alot of his performances. Actually, he *has* already got a
recording contract.

I was impressed by some others who did not make it in the final of the competition..
will comment on them at a later date. Please excuse any factual or spelling mistakes
since this is all from memory and the Sydney International competition occurred in July.
I think the next one (in the year 2000) is going to be huge since it is going to be one
just before the Olympics.
