Hi,
What is the best version on CD of Mozart's Requiem?
I'd be interested in people's opinions regarding
the style, the recording quality, as well any pointers
to reliable reviews of classical music CDs in general.
Thanks!

If you post this request in the "recordings" group, you will probably get
more responses than you could ever possibly use. But it might be worth it,
as you may get a consensus or a number of people agreeing that one or two
versions are among the best.

I like the CD versions by Colin Davis (the first one, with the BBC
Symphony, coupled with other works, including the Mass in c, K. 427 "The
Great Mass", also a wonderful work, on a bargain set Philips 438800-2). I
also like the Philips CDs by Gardiner and Schreier.

I find that Mozart's Requiem really gains from period instruments. I used to
like the modern instrument version under Sir Colin Davis but now I prefer
John Elliot Gardiner's period performance on Philips.

Can anyone offer an evaluation of the new completion of the Requiem by
Robert Levin,
which was recorded, I believe by the Boston Philharmonica (not the
BSO!)?

It's the Boston Baroque with Martin Pearlman on Telarc. There was also
an earlier recording with Rilling.

The completion itself - which isn't exactly new (ten years at least) -
is interesting, but much more conservative than one could expect from
Levin. Maunder and Druce went much farther. (That's neither a
compliment nor a criticism.) The performance is not quite to my liking,
and that's because I find the sound and the playing muddy and lacking
precision. (They can do much better: their recording of "Der Stein der
Weisen" is excellent.)

Ask on r.m.c.r, you'll get more replies.

I found it the worst (my order: Maunder, Suessmayr, Druce, Levin).
That of Maunder is a consistent version (leaving out the completely
Suessmayr movements and orchestration while retaining every bit of
provable Mozart), while Druce and Levin discards Suessmayr, but
retains his themes and movement heads. Maunder is also modest, his
new movements are sort of minimal (it's not so minimal to disturb the
proportions of the whole piece), while Druce writes the longest
movements. In the Amen Levin is proud of not modulating, which I
can't understand. I have some minor problems with Maunder's work
also, but the others are, to me, worse, and on a larger scale.

I've heard it in live performance (I forget who right now...) It sounded
to me sort of as if Gluck had undertaken the completion without making any
effort to enter into Mozart's spirit. All in all, very unsatisfying.

My favorite (and at this point I've owned about six recordings and heard
about twenty live performances) is the Collegium Aureum and the Tolzer
boys' choir. As someone else posted, the Requiem gains from period
performance, and the Collegium Aureum were among the more elegant period
performers. In addition, I find that the pure, innocent quality of a
child's voice seems to suit this work much more than a soprano who sings
as if she were Carmen or Aida. Unfortunately, I have only the LP and
the CD is out of print. By this posting, I invite anyone who has a CD
and wishes to sell it to contact me at my email address (removing the
antispam asterisk on my reply).

Just wanted to say thank you for all the helpful opinions!
(I've actually gotten more responses here than in the r.m.c.r. newsgroup.)

David van Tieghem????

Wow! A terrific contemporary musician joins this newsgroup! I played David's
records on WRPI-FM often 15 years ago. Welcome, David!
