The BBC Radio 2 chooses always the best recording, ensemble, etc.
From there I learnt a lot.
In 1996 I heard a broadcast of the Concierto de Aranjuez.
Unfortunately I don't who was playing the guitar.

I have bought 5 guitar CDs containing the Concierto de Aranjuez,
but none of the pleases as that of The BBC Radio 2.
Unfortunately the Classical CD magazine didn't give a proper evaluation.

How am I sure? I recorded from the radio on a tape
but missed the name of the performer.

I appreciate if someone could tell me about it.
For me it is difficult to access bbc site.

Thanks a lot
Carlos

You mean BBC Radio _3_ I would guess. From their website:

BUILDING A LIBRARY
RECOMMENDATIONS:
RODRIGO Concierto de Aranjuez

Reviewer: David Huckvale

First Choice:
John Williams (guitar), Philharmonia Orchestra,
Louis Fremaux
(recorded 1983; c/w Fantasia para un
Gentilhombre)
SONY CLASSICAL SK 37848 (CD)

Mid-Price Choice:
Julian Bream (guitar), Monteverdi Orchestra,
John Eliot Gardiner
(recorded 1974; c/w BERKELEY Guitar
Concerto; BROUWER Concerto elegiaco
[Guitar Concerto No.3])
RCA 09026 61605-2 (CD, mid-price)

... but finding out which version they actually broadcast at some
unspecified time in 1996 would be a little harder.

It would be interesting to see how BBC Radio 2 (or 3) can categorically say
that they choose the "best" recording. It's the programmer's favourite,
that's all.

Out of the 10+ Aranjueces I've heard, my favourite is, by far, Narciso Yepés
/ Odón Alonso.

They didn't. They just called them "recommendations".

What do you think of Paco de Lucia's recording with Colomer (Philips)?

I like Romero's version. Which Romero? I forget. It was also praised by
ClassicCD magazine.

Could be Angel Romero / Previn / LSO (he made another recording with the San
Antonio SO) or Pepe Romero / Marriner / St MITF. My bet is Pepe - this is
one of the best known recordings of this work, and I agree that it's
outstanding.

I like Paco de Lucía too but, not surprisingly, he sounds a bit too
flamenco. It's a very personal and interesting approach, but not the one I
like best.

I agree. I have about 10 different versions of the Concierto, and the Yepes,
IMHO, is the best. (on DG with Montreal Orch.)

A very close second would be by Ernesto Bitetti.

Sorry, I listened to the Romero's vinyl recording you mentioned and
it is not the one I am looking for. Pepe is a virtouse but not of my style.
I also listened to Paco too. It is too Flamenco and, strangely, didn't fit well.

The other ones I listened to are Carlos Bonel and Nobert Kraft.

The ones that might have a chance: Juliam Bream, John Willians.
I don't know if Manuel Barrueco recorded before 1997...

I never had a chance of hearing Narciso Yepés / Odón Alonso.

Perhaps the one I likes somehow reminds "Zorro" more on a Mexican direction
(???)

Now I am in doubt if the BBC Aranjuez was broadcasted in 1995 or 1996.
I had the same experiences with other music recordings and
I am aware that everything broadcasted by BBC Radio 2 is the best.

Anyway, thanks for trying.

There is an interesting version with Isabelle Moretti (Auvidis Valois V
4815) playing it on a harp.

My choice is the old Bream version with the Melos Chamber Orchestra (1963?). At the time it was a refreshing view of the score (particularly the adagio). I believe it still is

I agree with the Bream choice, but I have no idea if it captures the composer's intentions or not. It's just very appealing to me.
And now for something completely different, to use a Monty Python catchphrase: the concerto is presented in the film 'Brassed Off' transcribed for a British brass band, with the solo on a cornet. It's worth hearing.
