From 1966 till 1973 I attended all of his London concerts
except one (Mendlessohn's Elijah), and sat in on some rehearsals
and recording sessions. There were also some family gatherings
during those years, and I occasionally received letters
from him.
Today my only regret is that I was not old or wise enough
to exploit more fully the opportunities I had to be in his company.
Those were the years of the Beatles and as an 18 year old in London
I also had other things on my mind...
Still, I managed to collect most of his LP recordings,
and have added some CD's over the years. Here is a complete list
of what I have, in no particular order, on LP and CD. Everything considered,
it's quite an impressive list. If anyone can add to it
I'd like to hear from you. I'll post an update.

I would also like to convert the LP's to CD's. If anyone has
details of CD's converted from the above LP list please let me know.
It's hard for me to choose the best Horenstein recording.
However I would never want to be without Mahler's 1st (LSO),
Brahms 1st (LSO), or Bruckner's 8th (LSO).
These are quite exceptional readings, even by Jascha's standards,
and no other orchestra understood his intentions better
than the LSO during the 60's. There is a commitment and concentrated
power in their playing which is rarely heard anywhere. All are on CD in stereo.
Although all the other recordings have lots to offer
I would counsel newcomer's to Jascha Horenstein's art to start with one of these
three to get some idea of the excitement of actually being present at one of
his extraordinary concerts.
Happy listening everyone.

It is a pleasure to "meet" you, even from a distance and via a computer
screen. I am one of many who admires your cousin's conducting enormously,
and there are many of us. Someone recently posted a message on this
discussion group indicating that he was publishing a complete discography
of Jascha Horenstein's recordings, hoped to complete it within a year or
so, so you can begin to compare it to what you have.
At any rate, I just wanted to personally extend warm greetings from a
Horenstein "nut."

Does anyone know about this CD which I have:
Mahler 1, VSO (1960s...no date specified) Horenstein
on the Tuxedo label (from Switzerland)
I found this CD when I was passing vienna, and it was on "clearance sale"
The performance was quite fantastic, as the strings played with an old
world charm...heavy portamento at certain passages. The brasses are
so-so, but it was a very enjoyable performance. No note also on anything
other than the composer.
Any info would be helpful.
