I just received the latest press releases for the Vox Box, Turnabout and
other Moss Music Group lines. In all, there are 25 new releases in the
VoxBox line. The following are new since the last version of the catalog
back in December 1991:

In addition, there is a new line: Vox Legends. These are historical
recordings from the Vox archives, and sell for the same price as normal
2-CD Vox Boxes. They feature performances by Horenstein, Klemperer,
Horszowski, Perlemuter and others.
Updated catalogs for Vox Unique and Stradivari Classics will be
forthcoming. Questions or comments are welcome.
The following is taken from the most current Vox Box catalog. The VoxBox2
releases are selling locally for $10-11 ($8.50 on sale) and feature 2 CDs
which typically contain 60-75 minutes of music. The VoxBox3 releases are
selling locally for $15-16 ($13 on sale) and feature 3 CDs which typically
contain 55-65 minutes of music each. All releases listed should be currently
available.

This set is a fantastic value: comprehensive (they're all here), solid
performances, and good DDD sound.
All this, and only about ten bucks for the two-disc set.

I hate to disagree with anyone within the relatively small community of
people interested in Chavez, but I find the LSO amazingly ragged in this
set. The other complete set of these symphonies is conducted by Chavez
with the Mexico Symphony Orchestra (which could be billed as "Carlos
Chavez and His Orchestra"). This was recorded in the 50s. All I can
say is that Mexico in the 50s and London c. 1980 sound just the reverse
of what I would have expected. I imagine the Mata set is the only one
currently available in any case, but the Chavez set is in the category
of composers' performances that really are best (like Britten, unlike
Strauss).
