Hello,

I am looking the list of CDs Deutsche Grammophon has released under 20th
Century Classics series.
So far I have found three CDs:

Stravinsky: Les Noches, Mass; Leonard Bernstein
Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time; Yordanoff, Tétard, Desurmont,
Barenboim
Schoenberg: The Piano Music; Pollini

If you have the CD of this series please follow up this thread.

Thanks in advance.

I feel sure that the series must have been discontinued, as I've
never seen one on the shelves in ages (but I could be wrong).
Several of the items have found there way out in different
disguises. The Honegger/Karajan can be had on the Originals
series couples with the Stravinsky Concerto in D which came from
another "20th Century" disc (I think THAT one also had the
Symphony in C and Symphony of Psalms). The Berg Violin Concerto
is also out on Originals, I think.

I always found the contents of this series intriguing, but I only
ever bought one: the Karajan/Schoenberg/Berg/Webern box which is
very good.
(The Variations for Orchestra and Verklarte Nacht are on
Originals too!)
I also seem to remember an (I think) Kubelik version of
Schoenberg's Gurrelieder, some Carl Orff (The End of Time or
something like that), Kegel, and goodness knows what else....

Excellent.

Pollini doesn't do much for me in this music. I much prefer Paul Jacobs on
Nonesuch.

The whole box has been reissued by the Musical Heritage Society.

In this collection was two great operas: Doktor Faust, a masterwork of
Ferrucio Busoni directed by Ferdinand Leitner with Fischer-Dieskau in one of
his most perfect recording! There was also Palestrina, an opera of Hans
Pfitzner conducted by Kubelik, with a lot of great singer: Gedda,
Fischer-Diskau...
Two great boxes!

Firkusny in solo piano music of Janacek was one of these 20th century issues. I
believe it's now on the "originals" series. The Tokyo's original issue of the
Bartok Quartets was also in that series.

Maderna: Quadrivium, Aura, Biogramma. Sinopoli conducting the North
German Radio Orchestra.

Berg: Chamber Cto., 4 Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Piano Sonata.
Zukerman, Barenboim w/Boulez conduting the Ensemble Contemporain.
(may have returned in another incarnation).

One of my favorites from the series was the disc of assorted pieces by
Ligeti (DGG 423 244-2)

Chamber Concerto
Ramifications
Aventures
Ensemble Intercontemporain/Boulez

String Quartet No. 2
LaSalle Quartet

Lux Aeterna
North German Radio Choir, Hamburg/Helmut Franz

The performance of Lux Aeterna is problematic, but the others are all very
good, especially the Boulez performances, which are outstanding. These
are still my favorite performances of the wonderful Chamber Concerto and
Aventures. It's really too bad this series is mostly no longer around.
This Ligeti in particular seemed to disappear soon after it was released.

I just recently ordered one item from the DG 20th Century Classics series
from Berkshire Record Outlet: a 2-CD set of Henze's Symphonies Nos. 1-6.
I noticed several other items from that series on their website, though most
of the others I already had. Definitely worth checking if you're interested
in
this series.

I have the excellent Doktor Faust box. You can still find it at the
Berkshire Record Outlet.

Here are a few more details.
The Orff disc that everyone seems to hate is "Oedipus the King".
I also have these items in the series Berio:Coro. 423 902
Webern/Schonberg:Cbr Pcs. 437 036
Ives:Sym#4,.. 423 243
Martin/Egk. 429 858
Bussotti:Rara Requiem 2-437739

I think there may be a takemitsu disc as well.

Some other music by Apostel has appeared on CD but not, unfortunately,
his 2nd string quartet or piano concerto.

The Takemitsu disc contains Quatrain (1975), A Flock Descends into the
Pentagonal Garden (1977), Stanza I (1969), Sacrifice (1962), Ring (1961),
Valeria (1965/9).

I recommend this disc quite highly. I have perhaps listened to it perhaps a
hundred times within the last year (though there are other Takemitsu works,
such as _November Steps_ that are perhaps even more striking).
