A wonderful documentary film featuring Arthur Rubinstein which shows
him improvising a lot and playing snippets from the following works:

Chopin: Etude in A-Flat Major, Op. 25 No. 1;
" Etude in C Major, Op. 10 No. 1;
" Etude in A minor, Op. 10 No. 2;
" Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23;
Szymanowsky: Symphonie Concertante, Op. 60;
Ravel: Valses nobles et sentimentales;
Schubert: Sonata in B-Flat Major, D. 960.

The spoken parts are all in the original German, and the English
subtitles -- just hit the "CC" button in the playback window to show
the subtitles (or to turn them off if you prefer).

This clip was made in 1966 by the North German Radio when Arthur
Rubinstein came to Hamburg, Germany to inspect his own favorite,
personal Hamburg Steinway D-274 piano which was dropped from a crane
somewhere while he was taking it on tour. It was sent back to the
Hamburg Steinway factory for repairs. The event takes place in a room
at the Steinway factory in Stellingen, a suburb of Hamburg.

So it's not quite true what AR said a number of times about never
having visited Germany after 2nd World War.

Isaac Stern said he'd never perform in Germany again, and he was true to his
word ... but he did take the opportunity to hold master classes there.

Rubinstein actually vowed to never play in Germany again after the
First World War.

He did play several times in towns on the German border so German fans
could hear him.

As Tom Lehrer sang, "We taught them a lesson in 1918, and they've hardly
bothered us since then."

Big deal.

To me this footage rather looks like a big Steinway commercial,
aborted by A.R. with his long and rather inconsequential story about
the Chopin ms he bought at an auction.

The piano playing is tantalising, indeed.

I'm also kind of intrigued by the presence of Max Wilcox.

Indeed. When I was studying in Freiburg im Breisgau, I had the
opportunity to hear him in Basel (very close to the border) and Zürich.
I was enraptured.
And thank you for pointing out that the vow dated from WWI.

Greetings to all,

Many thanks for posting this. It was a pleasure to hear AR speak
(non-scripted) as well as play extemporaneously, in his prime. I have
the KULTUR video of home performances from the mid-40s, but this is
more of a treasure for me. I also delighted in his story about
acquiring the box of manuscripts belonging to that Countess (who cares
if it has nothing to do with the repair of his piano, for goodness'
sake!). I wonder if his family still has them?

"Enraptured" is the perfect word! That's what Rubinstein did for me
in recital, too. He was a unique genius of music, the piano, its
sound, and simply personality.

Thanks.

Hi,

He also played in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, near the German border.
That recital is commercially available on CD.
