Wow. I drop out for 15 years or so and when I come back, this group is
almost unrecognizable. Where'd everybody go? And where'd the new people
come from?

Let's see. I remember Matthew B. Tepper, who likes ducks. (I thought he
also liked Berlioz. Was that a different Matthew? Fields, maybe?) I
remember Sol L. Siegel, Lionel Tacchini, Ray Hall, probably a few
others.

Oh, and if Simon is an Australian named Simon Rabbits (Roberts to us
Up-Overs), then I remember him. Heck, I remember when he showed up to
this group back in ... 1997 or '98, I believe.

I don't see Don Patterson, John Grabowski, James Jorden, Tony Movshon,
etc. If I took some time to jog my memory and/or suffer through the
Google Groups interface, I could probably name dozens more. Oh well.
Time marches on, I guess.

Anyway, I thought you lot might be interested in a Name That Conductor
quiz I put together for Sporcle. It's the first of a projected 5-quiz
series:

<http://www.sporcle.com/games/opusthepenguin/name-that-conductor-slideshow>

The average Sporcler won't find it interesting, but many of you might.
If you like it, feel free to give me 5 globes and mark it a Favorite.
But I'm honestly not trolling for votes. I'm not even sure what those
votes would do for me other than stroke my ego. Sporcle would never slot
a quiz like this for publication and promotion. It's too niche. They
want general-knowledge stuff. So my main goal is to share this quiz with
all of you because I think you might enjoy it. Much more than upvotes,
I'd enjoy seeing your snarky comments and corrections either in the
Comments section for the quiz or in this thread.

Assuming I don't get negative feedback telling me this kind of
"advertising" is inappropriate, I'll post links to the next quizzes in
the series when I make those.

I am afraid to admit I got only 16 out of 25. Am I still welcome to read the newsgroup here? :-)

All 25 in 2:52. It took a couple of tries for me to get JoAnn Falletta, though.

You beat me by a few seconds. It took me a couple of tries to type 'Knappertsbusch.'

What did the first try look like? I ask because the quiz would also have
accepted Knappertsbush, Knappertbusch, and Knappertbush. I figured with a
name like that, close enough should count.

Working on it, Mr. Demanding! Why don't you just sit back and bask in your
awesomeness for a bit?

Could you have identified all 25 by picture alone, or did you need help
from the suggestive recordings?

2:39...I stumbled over spelling one name for a while and then the opera conductor stumped me for a while because I didn't realize there was actually a clue naming a specific recording down at the bottom of each picture--I should have scrolled down before starting.

Hans Luxury Yacht.

Should've thought of that. I've edited the quiz to accept Hans Luxury-Yacht
and also, just to be safe, Hans Throat-Warbler Mangrove.

I failed to spell Sargent correctly. Sarjeant, Sargeant ... I gave up
the ghost on this one. Silly name anyway. ;)

Also failed on the opry conductor. 23.5/25 ain't too bad.

Ray Hall, Taree

The quiz accepts last names only, so you actually didn't have to fiddle
with (Y)evgeny. I know, I know. NOW I tell you. It's Sporcle (and Jeopardy)
convention and we just figure everyone knows already. If you specified the
first name, the quiz was prepared to accept any combination of
Evgeny/Yevgeny with Mravinsky/Mravinski. You also could've typed
Mvravinskii and, unless you're a VERY fast typist, that would've worked. It
would've grabbed the Mravinski and declared you right before you had a
chance to type the final i.

I haven't seen the first name spelled Evgeni or Yevgeni, but I probably
should include those possibillities.

Similarly, the quiz would've taken any combination of JoAnn/JoAnne and
Falletta/Faletta/Falleta. (Capitalization, of course, wouldn't matter.)

Ha! The only variant I thought to include was Sergeant. I suppose that
could be cruel to people thinking, "I don't know how it's spelled. All I
know is it ISN'T spelled like the military rank!"

Oh, the quiz also would've accepted "Flash Harry," of course.

> Also failed on the opry conductor. 23.5/25 ain't too bad.

I definitely couldn't have identified Bonynge on sight before making this
quiz. It was hard to even find a picture of him that met my requirements--
recognizable when resized to 480 pixels high and actually in the act of
conducting. Most Bonynge pics seemed to be publicity stills with him making
eye contact with the camera and looking like George Hamilton with a perm.

I was quite happy with the picture I eventually found. It included Joan
Sutherland, his wife, which I hoped would help some people.

But hey, you got Knappertsbusch on the first try, right?

I got all 25, though I admit I didn't recognize Hogwood and had to go by
his repertoire, and I kept trying to spell Serafin as "D E S A B A T A."
I'm not as fast as I used to be; it took me all of 10:58.

Oh, and by the way, quack. I'm still here, but haven't been looking in on
the group so often these days, as I got married last June.

The person I really miss is John Harkness, who died a few years ago.

Oh dear. I'm afraid it's been so long I only remember his name. Individual
characteristics have more or less faded away. I'm left with a vague memory
of RMCR as a single, delightful, jumbled, quirky, schizoid personality. I'm
sure John Harkness is in that mix, for which I'm grateful to him and
saddened at the loss.

I needed six minutes, because I had trouble with Serafin. And I
admit it: I needed the recording hints for a few of them.

"The Dude", huh? I prefer "Dimples" myself.

It's the 100-composers test that drives me nuts. I can never get
much past 85.

The Dude abides. The quiz would've accepted "The Dude" or even "Dude" as
a correct answer. There's a potential surprise in that for someone unsure
of the spelling and trying to type "Dudeamel".

Here are the other alternative names that the quiz will credit as
correct:

Bernstein - Lenny/Lennie
HvK - Herbie
Stokowski - Stoki/Stokey/Stokie
Fiedler - Richard Farnsworth
Beecham - Colonel Sanders
Szell - George Burns
Sargent - Flash Harry
Hogwood - Michael Caine

It's the ones you coulda woulda shoulda that rankle. I just got 73.
Missed Debussy, Telemann, Bellini, and Barber among others. I didn't miss
Khachaturian so much as misspell him. Didn't remember to stick an h after
the K. Same thing happens with Khrushchev. Then there are the ones you
don't try because you figure, if Lalo, Charpentier, Enescu, Glinka, Bax,
Pergolesi, Palestrina, Praetorius, and freakin' IVES (!!!!!) don't make
the cut, then I'm not even going to bother trying Albéniz or Granados or
Reger or Wolf. Yet those four are on the list.

I guess I should've realized Archiv just doesn't have any Ives conductors
or orchestras in its stables.

I only learned after his death that he had been a major film critic, at
least in Canada.
