When I first heard the angelic tenor, Helmut Krebs, in the recitative,
"Der Heiland ist gekommen," in Cantata 61, "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland"
(MHS 516) I did a double take because I could hear every word clearly and
*in German*! His voice is exactly right for Bach, so much so that,
whenever I hear a Bach cantata with a tenor part and the tenor is not
Krebs, I feel ROBBED.

I've compiled the only Krebs checklist I know of, though I call it a
discography to let it come up in search engines.

I didn't save all of his recordings but only the best ones. Wonderfully
expressive he is in die schöne Müllerin and Mozart. I do have his greatest
rarity, a Handel disc, which the late Don Hodgman found for me. It is one
of the few LPs I am saving. The Distler is dreadful. Not even Krebs can
convince me of the merits of Strauss and Wolf. I have not included the St.
John Passion, since I replaced the LPs with CDs. Ditto for the Fritz
Lehmann live recording of the st. Matthew Passion, the first complete one
in German. (Koussevitzky's was in English, which I'll be sending
eventually.)

[In my quest to get all the Krebs recordings, I had the LP but not the 45,
which I discovered had items not otherwise available. Don Hodgman found it
for me and stuck it inside an LP (Brahms and Wolf), which he also found
for me. Attached with a note on the LP, "EPA 37121 inside." Indeed, there
are a number of DG recordings that came out on 45. DG has collected many
of them (as well as some 10"-ers), including this disc, in its 2-CD
Original Masters series, "the singles," 474576, which I am retaining as a
souvenir of my decades of collecting.

Fiori Musicale EFM 42018 (10") (Gift from Don Hodgman. Disc entirely
unknown to me!)
Schumann: Dichterliebe, Op. 48. Helmut Krebs, tenor; Félix Schroeder,

NOT CONVERTING: Archive 3079-81, Bach: Christmas Oratorio. Krebs and
Lehmann (part) and Günther Arndt, who complete the recorded after
Lehmann's death, though the outside of the discs do not say this, though
the inserts probably do. The individual discs inside the box are all
wrapped and unopened. I fondly remember the nice smell the yellow albums
had when first opened and want to a generous (financial) donor to
VanderCook College or Music (Chicago) with the delight of opening them for
the first time. The smell did not last long when opened, and I have no
idea whether such a smell will still be present. I know the recording,
since Allen Mackler made an open-reel tape for me. I finally got my own
copy in 1985 for $12, but never opened the discs. I prefer the remake with
Fritz Werner. Still, I should like to borrow back the discs or get an
electronic copy to add to my collection of electronic copies.

FYI, FileFactory has a 500mb limit on downloading files if you are not
a premium subscriber, so I would think that for most people, the two
Krebs zip files are not available to download.

Or at least that was the message I got. This may be tied to the fact
that they reported high traffic at the time I tried. will try at a
less busy time and see what happens.
