Does anyone have favorite recordings of waltzes and polkas from
Strauss, father and son?

I have two cheapo CDs from Onyx, Music from Vienna I and III, but
that's about it. (I enjoy them, incidentally.)

Yes indeed. My favorite Strauss disc is the one with the VPO led by
Karl Bohm on cheap DGG Musikfest. Bohm finds beauties and emotions in
the standard Strauss selections that I have never heard anywhere else.
It is a pity that the disc is short - only about 47 minutes.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the Karajan works but his 1987 New Years
Concert with the VPO is superlative.

There's a 2-disc set from DG that contains a series of Strauss
recordings by the VPO form the 1920s-1980s with various conductors
(Kleiber, Kna, Bohm, Furtwangler, et al).
It is great. It is a lot of fun to listen to--different styles
and sounds applied to similar repertory and orchestra. And what wonderful
Schmaltz and swing throughout!

For my money the most enjoyable J. Strauss II recordings are those
with the Vienna Phil conducted by Willi Boskovsky on various
London/Decca CDs. They have style, sentiment and spirit, and are
superlatively played. Most of them are now available cheaply as well.

Avoid, however, the Boskovsky-led Strauss recordings on EMI/Angel with
an underpowered band called the Johann Strauss Orchestra of Vienna.

Do not miss Ferenc Fricsay's great DG CD of selections from Strauss'
waltzes and polkas with the Berlin Radio Symphony. It is available as a
very inexpensive CD and is one of the most spirited recordings of some
of this music.

"Carlos Kleiber conducts Johann Strauss"( a slight misnomer since there
are several works of Josef Strauss included) with the Vienna Philharmonic
on Sony.
These are excepts from the 1992 New Years Concert. Wonderfully vibrant
performances throughout. Makes you wish you'd been there, which is not
always the case with other recordings of these concerts.

I love Willi Boskovsky's recordings of Strauss with the Vienna
Philharmonic on London/Decca. Great style, spirit and sentiment with
superlative playing and consistently good recordings over a span of
years. Avoid, however, Boskovsky's later re-recordings of Strauss on
EMI/Angel with something called "The Johann Strauss Orchestra of
Vienna." This presumed pick-up orchestra is undersized and not as well
recorded.

well, there is a nice set of performances of these pieces from
the 1987 new year's concert in vienna, performed by the vienna
philharmonic and conducted by herbert von karajan. there is a wonderful
balance of lightness and concentration and the two encores- the blue
danube waltz and radozky march are especially impressive. i have enjoyed
this CD very much since purchasing it about 3 years ago.

I have some recommendations about J. Strauss CD's.
Sorry It's the first time I am looking at a newsgroup so I hope the
information will go to the person who asked the question !
My recommandations.

Karajan 1987 is fine but also the first New years concert of Carlos
Kleiber (on Sony).

Two great recordings are Reiner RCA and Fricsay DG

Historical recordings : Karajan 1946-1949 in Vienna are just comming
on EMI « Karajan Edition ».

There are two collections of Strauss on Chesky conducted by the great
Jascha Horenstein. You're unlikely to find anything more echt-Wiener
than these. Recordings are astonishing too.

In addition to the above recommendations, try Willi Boskovsky conducting
the Vienna Philharmonic on London. There's a 5 CD set, available in
Canada, called The Johann Strauss Experience, catalogue number 436-576-2.
It features some other members of the Strauss family, as well. There's
also a 2 CD set available in the US on a London double that features part
of what's on the 5 CD set.

I think the answer to this question depends on whether you want to hear
superb performances of familiar 20 pieces or explore. The Marco Polo
series is a remarkable accomplishment (51 or 52 discs) but when one comes
to the familiar works that everybody has recorded, a certain lack of that
last bit of finesse and polish that separates the good from the great is
noted. I would strongly suggest that if you really like J. Strauss you
buy one or two of this series, just to learn how prolific J. S. Jr. was.
I also like Josef (Jr.'s brother) Strauss, and Marco Polo has a series for
HIM as well.

Personal favorites? "the Strauss Dynasty" of Discover, if it is ever
reissued. Horenstein on Chesky. A rather beefy Reiner on RCA. And
Boskovsky, who is good, but does not eclipse the others. If you want the
best Boskovsky, get his early recordings with a small ensemble on
Vanguard--absolute delights.
