Here's a repost from my Ives series back in 2009. The original mp3 zip
file was somehow deleted - so I uploaded it again, but now the
download features wav files -> FLAC format.
___________

Many here know this record – another one of a series that Columbia
issued celebrating the music of Ives, recorded in the centennial of
Ives’ birth. A pity it was never reissued on CD, although the short
length may be a factor (the whole disc is less than 35 minutes long).

And for those not familiar with Ives, or have difficulty with his more
challenging music, give this a try! Lots of humor, subtle and not,
mixed in with all kinds of unusual arrangements. (e.g. the Country
March has entire swaths of material that went into “Putnam’s Camp”…and
a quote from the child’s song “I know something you don’t know” that
had me laughing out loud.) There are serious and introspective items
as well, but mostly…it’s a good natured party record!
_______

Zip file FLAC format - 150MB includes scans of the back and front
jacket cover.

- Bill, who sees a link between the Country March and the US tax code
- though the March makes more sense...

That didn't prevent Sony from filling our the most recent CD issue of
Bernstein's recording of Symphony #2 with about *half* the contents of
Gunther Schuller's LP of short Ives works entitled "Calcium Light Night" --
not including the title work, for some no doubt idiotic reason.

The original Sinclair LP appears to have been something of a one-off for
Columbia Masterworks, having been issued in SQ Quadraphonic sound (on which
I'll let Bill S. report at length, should he wish to do so), following the
series of discs by Gregg Smith Singers and other performers, and most of
all the magnificent Ives Centennial Box of 1974, most of the contents of
which remains locked in Sony's Gitmo of Neglect.

Thanks so much for this transfer.

I'd be happy do, if someone would send a copy.

Come to think of it... I might have the LP. Let me get back to you on this.

I played this 38-year-old LP (MQ 32969) in surround.

Some of the pieces are instantly recognizable as Ives, with their odd
rhythms and strange harmonies. The highlight (for me) is a composition with
a Partch-ish title: "Chromatimelodtune". It's a twelve-tone fugue that seems
to be poking fun at itself. I found myself wincing and laughing at the same
time.

The sound is amazingly good. Though a touch "mechanical", it's clean and
"immediate". On my system, which has a pickup and tonearm that /do not/
exaggerate surface noise, there is virtually none. If you have good playback
equipment, I don't think you'll be at all disappointed.

Columbia had a reputation for lousy sound that was not altogether deserved
(though their orange-peel-afflicted surfaces fully deserved condemnation).
After all, Columbia Special Products mastered and pressed a lot of MHS
disks, and they were very good. I suspect Lenny's lousy-sounding NYPO
recordings tarred the whole label.

Here is yet another Columbia recording that should be reissued. Sony, oh
Sony...?

I've got tons of SQ LPs. Perhaps it's time to pull them out and give them a
re-listen. Thirty years ago I'd spend a whole weekend listening to music.
Now...

Speaking of Ives and songs, has anyone tried the complete song series
on Naxos -- 5 CDs, I think? I've been looking at them at Amazon.com,
but Berkshire Record Outlet, http://www.broinc.com has some of them
slightly cheaper. Any comments on the performers and performances?
