Opera diva Renee Fleming appeared on the David Letterman "Late Night" TV show this week and sang the list of "Top 10 Opera Lyrics." The premise was funnier than some of the lyrics that were written for her, but she did a great job "selling" it. It's also quite nice to see classical music performers make one of their too infrequent appearances on the late night talk shows on American TV. See:

Actually top-10 /tunes/. Clever idea to add current-affairs lyrics to keep
them from sounding "intellectual".

It should become one the Top 10 most lamest things a classical music artist
ever did.

She'll have to work hard to overtake Melchior in that category.

Horowitz greeted him with a jolt of Klezmer music.

I haven't followed Ms Fleming's career, but I understand she didn't used to
sing like this. There's a parallel in acting.

I've watched a lot of "Gunsmoke", and occasionally see actors near the start
of their careers. Some have not developed the mannerisms that would later mar
their performances.

Being gifted and talented in any area doesn't preclude one from behaving
like a fool in another.

I don't like her current singing at all - a thick layer of tristesse slathered all over everything and its all so mannered, blowsy and tricky that I really don't believe anything she sings anymore - she is totally unable to sing a simple line - I don't know if its age or what - a shame really since the basic quality is still full and lovely but I can't get to it through all the junk

Oh, come now, Pavarotti was the king of crapola like that.

On the 60 Minutes memorial program to Mike Wallace, Wallace (in an
interview years later) said that that was his favorite of all the
interviews he had ever done. They replayed a portion. One great
moment came when Wallace asked Horowitz to play "Stars and Stripes".
Horowitz hemmed and hawed, claimed he didn't know it any more, etc.
Wanda simply said "play it", and he did.

I wouldn't be surprised if she appears on the following show to plug her latest cd:
