the very fine Howard Hanson performance (Mercury MG 50085 with
Loeffler's Poem for Orch; Griffes: Pleasure Dome; White Peacock;
Clouds; Bacchanale) - a very different concept from Toscanini's (which
I obtained about 30 years ago from Music Master's - anyone remember
that store? I'm sure there are a few of the posters that do).

I sure do. I went in there and they were playing the WAM K287 with
Cantelli from their own pressing

John_H...@msn.com appears to have caused the following letters to be
typed in news:1125097532.6...@g43g2000cwa.googlegroups.com:

Visited Music Masters back in 1979; that's where I got some interesting
black-jacketed Toscanini bootlegs, such as the Salzburg _Fidelio_ bits, a
_Falstaff_ Act I from the year previous to the complete one, and a disc
containing Gershwin's _Blue Monday_ with performers whose identities I
cannot recall, Toscanini's broadcast of "Rhapsody in Blue," and the song
"Jascha, Mischa, Toscha, Sasha," played by the late Bobby Short.

Why are Loeffler, Griffes and MacDowell always mentioned in the same breath?

How about John Alden Carpenter, Arthur Foote, and John Knowles Paine?
Actually, Griffes, Loeffler, and Carpenter all wrote some works that
could be classified as American Impressionism.
