One of the greats of the 20th century. I don't think I've ever heard a Poulenc composition that I didn't like.

Agreed, although I probably could live without the harpsichord
concerto. I have heard, but do not own , his organ concerto. A
suggested recording ? Thanks,

You might want to investigate a newly released 20-CD box of Poulenc's
pieces, released by EMI France, and available from Amazon.fr at a very
nice price.

Incidentally, has anyone noticed that several of EMI's recent big boxes
of CDs are now pressed in Poland, rather than in The Netherlands as in
the past? The quality seems to be good in both cases.

Berj Zamkochian with Munch/BSO; also Maurice Durufl with Georges Prtre
conducting one of those French orchestras with a long puzzling name.

I have never heard any Poulenc, to my knowledge. When I was taking piano
lessons some years ago, I took along a couple of my own pinao compositions
for my piano teacher to play. She said "Your music reminds me of Poulenc".
I figured that if I sounded like Poulenc, he couldn't be any good :) Maybe
I should fix that.

The EMI recordings maintain a very high level of quality. They're
available in smaller batches for those who don't want to take the full
plunge. This is a nice one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000024TDP/

I really like his chamber music. I first fastened on his trio for piano,

Fevrier, Casier, and Faisandier.

Agreed. Here is another cheap intro for said Trio , which cd I have
and enjoy, the solo oboe and flute sonatas very nice, too ( which 2 I
prefer a bit over said Trio ) :

Thanks to everyone for their Poulenc suggestions. I have listened to some
pieces (so far, on youtube only) and have found it agreeable. And it is
nothing like my own compositions :)

There's a Philips disc with the Labeques playing the Concerto for Two Pianos
and Orchestra with Ozawa/BSO. That's all well and good, but the disc also
includes a few short pieces, including the Capriccio d'après le Bal Masqué,
L'embarquement pour Cythère, and the Elégie en accords alternés, and they
are completely lovely.

IMO those works and several others are
handled more deftly by these compleat Poulencians:

If the Tacchino 2CD set on EMI is still around, I'd say get that
instead. The Roge is good, but a bit too "dreamy" for this light, fun
music.

Well, I could live without the harpsichord, period.
Love the piece of furniture, hate the sound.
That and the bagpipes.

(Oh no ! Now some mad composer may read this post and decide to write a
sonata for bagpipes and harpsichord !)

I believe it was okay with Poulenc if somebody played it on the piano.
At any rate, it has been recorded that way.

Agreed. Roge plays beautifully, but Tacchino has an acerbic edge that
works well in this music. His recordings of the 2-piano music with Fevrier
are a must-have.
