Could I have some help selecting the best of Celibidache's non-
Brucknerian (already have them) recordings. His repertoire on CD seems
to be growing exponentially. I have heard good things about the DG
Brahms, DG Debussy, EMI Brahm's Requiem, Beethoven's 1-7-8, and
Tchaikovsky 6. Does anyone have other compelling additions that have
stood the test of time.

If you like the Bruckner on EMI, I would recommend the Wagner excerpts on
the same label.

How good, if I may ask? I have the Bernstein/NYP on DG (58'31")
and figured Celi would probably be more of the same so I've
never bothered with it. I have Celi's Tch 5 and enjoy it as
often as I can't stand it ... if that makes sense.

I would recommend his Prokofiev 5 on DG and a coupling of Wagner's
prelude to Tristan (fabulous performance) and Debussy's La Mer on
Meteor. The Eroica on EMI has been much criticised by I find it
extraordinary.

Celi's Mozart 40th, Faure Requiem, Beethoven 3, various Ravel pieces, and
Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms on the Exclusive label, his Bartok Concerto for
Orchestra and Hindemith Mathis der Maler on Arlecchino, plus on other labels
his Strauss Death and Transfiguration and Don Quixote, his Sibelius 2 and 5,
Shostakovich 1--all have enthralled me at one time or another.

Similarly, the LvB 7th on EMI has also been criticized in this newsgroup,
yet I found it wonderful. I was dubious of the tempo at the beginning, but
when the horns kicked in at the end of the first movement I was convinced.

I have been less impressed with the Eroica, although I'm not sure I can lay
my finger on why. I guess that while I found his tempo choices in the 7th
allowed for greater clarity and precision, adding to the music, I thought
that the Eroica sounded stretched and strained. Just goes to show that we
all listen for different things...

According to the following review:

- Nobody in my experience has shown such an understanding of Debussy's lights and shadows as Sergiu Celibidache. He can galvanize the orchestra into euphoric flights no less thrilling than Munch's, yet he can suddenly still the turmoil and reveal dark happenings below the surface.

That is so extraordinarily useful, responding with a link to a 15-year old query! I'm sure this person, who has long disappeared from this newsgroup will be so grateful!

I believe you were so impressed with this musicweb review you linked it someplace else, too. And maybe, too, on other newsgroups?

The real question of course is why you feel it is your job to deliver meta comments on virtually everything posted here.

However FYI quite a bunch of people have commented on Mr. Lee's funny habit of resurrecting ancient threads for no apparent reason other than posting links.

Oh dear lord...

That said, I do wish someone would make "32 Short Films About Otto Klemperer".

"The script is by Celi’s son, who will also direct."

So, not likely to cover the Abbie Conant incident much?

As to non-Bruckner recordings of interest, I like:

- The overtures disc, and the Wagner chunks disc (EMI)
- Schumann's Rhenish Symphony (EMI)
- Tod und Verklärung (DG or MPO's own label; DG is more intense but
final harp is badly out-of-tune)

This idea is so horrible that I wonder if this movie will ever see the light of day. I know movies don't have to open in cinemas anymore, with real people leaving their homes in order to buy a ticket, but even then it seems beyond fringe.

I guess they thought the movie about that string quartet (with that actor who ordinarily is a serial killer playing the cello) demonstrated that you can make a movie about classical musicians. But four guys on a stage acting weird is a little cheaper than a whole orchestra.
