We are also doing Haydn's Creation in English in Spring of '04. So, I would
also like to find an english recording of that too.
These works in this language are not easy things to find... Thanks for your
help!

I've not heard of a Mendelssohn Paulus in English. Would be interested to know
of one as well.

This is not an endorsement but rather an answer to the question. There is a
Haydn Creation by Robert Shaw/Atlanta in English on Telarc CD-80298.

To clarify, the absence of endorsement is not intended to be a negative mark --
I should have been clearer and stated that I haven't listened to the piece
carefully enough (yet) to form the basis for an opinion.

In what language is Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos' recording sung?

Deutsch, with Dusseldorf (EMI).

I can't recall any version in English either. There have been so few
recordings of Paulus over the years that one of us should have noticed!

Alternatives from Christopher Hogwood (L'Oiseau-Lyre 4303972) and Simon
Rattle (EMI 7541592). The Hogwood version uses a boy's choir as well as
adults, the Rattle version adults. I have only heard excerpts from the
Hogwood version, which uses larger forces than one might expect. What I
heard (Part 1) was very good. I haven't heard anything from the EMI or
Telarc sets.
There is also a version from Newport Classics (NPD85627-2) conducted by, I
believe, Johannes Somary.

Not heard it but, given the Düsseldorf forces, I would think it is in
German.

For the Haydn Creation in English, Simon Rattle on EMI (non-HIP),
Hogwood on L'oiseau Lyre/Decca/London.

The only English version of St. Paul that I know of is on Chandos
directed by Hickox. I owned it briefly - I didn't like it much
(especially the tenor soloist, if I recall correctly) and subsequently
dropped it, as I did with his recording of Elijah.
The English version of the Creation I enjoy most is on O-L directed by
Hogwood. I very much like the newish Hengelbrock on DHM, too - but
it's in German.

Er.. The Hickox version is in German. I just checked the very short excerpt
available on the Chandos web site, the first half of "Jerusalem! Die du
tötest die Propheten . . .", and that was unquestionably sung in German.
My apologies - owned it more briefly than I thought. Would've thought
I'd remember the language, though...
It might be some time before we see a recording of St. Paul in
English. It took long enough for the HIP version of Elijah on Decca
(Paul Daniel) to come out.

Many thanks, all, for the referrals. I understand the points made by many
re: caliber of performance. My need for the English, though, is as a study
aid over the next several months prior to performance.
Appreciated!

Is there also an English version of Minneapolis?

Of course, this has to be a fake Tepper. The real one would never
have stooped so low.
