The programme?
Chopin Op. 28 Preludes (complete)
Chopin Op. 10 Etudes (complete)
Chopin Op. 25 Etudes (complete)
The Op. 25 Anda had recorded for EMI but this is the only recording
which has so far surfaced of Op. 10. (I believe it had surfaced on
Fonit Cetra on LP, probably in inferior sound)
An amazing feat made all the more amazing by Anda's fabulous technical
polish (the performances are not perfect, but as perfect as anyone
could ever make them, I think) and by his extraordinary imagination in
this music.
Nice to go back to someone like Anda after all that sophomoric Chopin
playing in Warsaw this past couple of weeks, I have to say.

I've just heard this too and was engrossed - and I agree it's
technically as good as anyone can reasonably ask - but what a
wonderful musician! (and what an insane programme - but he makes it
work).
Yes, through some incredible magic.
Listen again to Op. 10, No. 6. I doubt I have heard any pianist since
Raoul von Kozcalski's first 78 RPM version who can turn this piece
into the darkest, most soulful music one has ever heard. Like a
Beckett play dark.
TD
Tom, have you compared these performances to the ones on Audite ("Edition
Géza Anda Vol. III", Op. 25 and 28, from 1955/1957), DG ("Troubadour of the
Piano", Op. 28, 1959) and Aura (live in Ascona, Op. 25, 1965)?
Any opinion on the other Anda relase on Orfeo with Bach Partita 2, Chopin
Sonata No. 2, Ravel Valses nobles et sentimentales, and Schumann Carnaval?
Thanks!
M. A.
I have NOT compared versions of the same works. A sterile exercise, I
think. Each one will be a different and unique moment in time.
The Aura I don't know, I think.
The Orfeo Bach/Chopin/Ravel is special for it's repertoire in
particular. Anda? Ravel? Bach? Self-recommending, I should think.
Now I want the Liszt TEs!!!
LOL
Well, I can dream, can't I?
TD
So how are the live Preludes? 24 pieces or one story?
Or are the Etudes the main attraction?
For me the whole concert is the main attraction.
Is this not the ONLY time any pianist has ever tackled such a
programme and pulled it off? And to do it in front of the crowd at the
Salzburg Festival is even more of a coup, I should think.
Incidentally, Herman, there have been other Anda performances of the
Preludes, and also Op. 25, you know.
TD
The other Anda versions did not either, to my ears, match the magic
from the Salzburg recital.....the Aura recital is from the same summer
in 1965...but was less inspired. The Audite performance is not in
really clear sound...which is one of the reasons the orfeo release is
so good....the miking is fairly close but offers very clear
sound....which is required to pick up all of the magical phrasing that
Anda displayed that evening. Therefore i can't really offer a
meaningful comparison with the earlier Audite release.
I have the 1972 recital but have listened only once....and need to go
back for another.

Yes I know, but I do not have a live Op. 28 by Anda, to whom I am kind
of attached from my teen years onwards.
Thanks! That's very helpful.

Tom, I would like to hear you play some Chopin.
> Where can I purchase this?
"Offer price" at MDT. If you want to roll the dice.
SE.
Amazing disc indeed. I am just from Munich and purchased this one and
some more Orfeo releases (Bernstein's Salzburg debut with the NYPO,
Ansa with Maazel/VPO doing Beethoven PC1, Symphonie Fantastique and
Till from Salzburg 63, Kna/Curzon/VPO/All Brahms/Salz 55) from Ludwig
Beck's where only the Orfeos are cheaper from anywhere I know [11 Euro
all of them either 1 or 2 CD sets), all other CDs are more expensive
from anywhere.
