Does anyone out there in RCMR-land house their CD collection in Boltz racks?
How do you like them?

I'm using racks of my own design which consist of particle board, dowels, hanger bolts, wing nuts, and X-braces I can find only at Container Store, and then only by special order. I could build more, but have kind of aged out of major projects of this sort.

Meanwhile, my collection has overflowed into what used to be a darkroom (the Frau used to do a lot of photography).

So, if there are any Boltz users, how was your experience during and post construction?

TIA

Got 'em. Love 'em. I have the expanding 600 cd models. Of course, the
racks and the cds are in the garage now that I've ripped the collection.

It is possible to over-tighten the steel rods during assembly, leading
to a unwieldy twist. I'd recommend using the leashes to bolt them to a
wall as they can be a real falling hazard unless on a very flat solid
surface. The other disadvantage is the possibility of cds falling
through the open back. Over all, though, I'm happy.

I have a few of the wall hanging ones. Great! Quality stuff.

Let's see $300 per 600 CD rack. 12,000 CDs divided by 600= 20 racks.
Thats about $9000 for racks. Nah.

I use these. I stack then two high. They're cheap (in several
respects), but serve the purpose. They line the basement walls.

By my maths 20 racks @ $300 = $6,000

I use pine boards, 1x12 x 10' for the uprights, and 1x6 for the horizontals. A sheet of 1/4" ply serves to separate the two shelves, so I get a double shelf up to the ceiling. Wood screws hold them together.

Cheapest way to store CDs is in cardboard boxes 12" long by 6"wide by 5 inches deep. Cut off the top flaps, glue the bottom flaps and store them side by side on shelves.

I swear by the 17 litre US Really Useful Box, clear.
Not cheap at 15.99 in Office Depot, but the contents
could be much more valuable:

I skip the cardboard boxes. The shelves work fine without them.

I've built several shelves that are 2 CDs height + a few inches, in total height between shelves, plus owning some bookshelves with this property. It then becomes extremely easy to stack one row of CDs on top of the bottom row. Simply done with 4-5" width thin but strong lengths of cardboard between the two rows. In essence, the weight distribution alone is taken care of, and in any case, all that is really necessary is to prevent a top CD falling down between CDs on the bottom row.

Works like a dream. Like any system, box sets can still remain a bit of a pain, and I tend to store them separately. I keep 3 main categories, rock, jazz, and classical, with classical being by far the biggest, although lately I have been in a rocking out type of mood.

I meant store the boxes on the shelves side-by-side, not end-to-end. You will need 12" deep shelves (or at least 10" deep) with about 6" between shelves
