ArkivCD - Why?

ArkivMusic last week included an ArkivCd (that's their CD-R series)
reissues of an out-of-print EMI Forte series 2 CD set containing
Giulinin recordings of Dvorak 7-9 + fillers in its new release
announcement.

http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=74201 - Price
$28.99

EMI released a Gemini series 2 CD set of exactly the same material/
recordings in 05/2006, and it is still widely available, including on
ArkivMusic's own site. Browse through the Dvorak listings, select one
of the threee symphonies, and Select Guilini from the listed
conductors and you'll see both issues right together.

http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=133640 - Price
$12.99

Why would someone pay over twice the price for the ArkivCd CD-r?

ArkivMusic must be rich, or there's virtually no cost involved in
setting up an item to be available as an ArkivCd (production and
licensing costs). I doubt seriously if the latter be the case, or the
catalog of material available would probably be much more vast than it
is. And this is not the first time I've seen this sort of thing among
their "new releases". Perhaps their appeal with ArkivCd is to people
who, seeing someone with a CD that interests them, want the "exact"
same item and packaging, period. I don't know. The offering just seems
wierd.

I doubt people are interested in the "exact" packaging for an ArkivCD
reissue, rather I suspect the opposite, as Arkiv's is rather
amateurish--I'm sure many here can make just as good a copy as them.

A few years ago, ArkivCDs were comparable in price with budget to mid
priced commercial CDs, but their price keeps going up and up. Either
the licensing fee is huge, or they're padding their profit margins
(ruling out increased cost of production, since there is no evidence
that that is the case).

FWIW, I've stopped buying ArkivCDs. Too much other stuff I want before
I start paying premium prices for discs with crappy packaging, and may
very well be commercially released in the near future.

I suspect they only pay for what they sell. That's the only
explanation I can think of for their lack of discrimination. They
probably put up whatever the labels send them.

I will buy from them when something is simply not available at a
reasonable price anywhere else, e.g. the Leonid Kogan Artist Profile.
Their packaging is pretty good these days, better than the "on demand"
product from some others (e.g. Naxos).

Yes, I've wondered the same thing several times on seeing an Arkiv CD-R
priced higher than a reissue on pressed CD by the original label (or its
budget subsidiary).

In the case of operas and other works originally issued with a libretto
and translations in the booklet, some customers might be willing to pay
more for the Arkiv CD-R (now that they include a reproduction of the
original booklet) than for a budget reissue without texts.

In the case of many other releases, however, even the original notes
were nothing but a generic paragraph or two about the work(s) on the
disc. It's indeed difficult to see any reason to pay more for the Arkiv
CD-R here. The case you cite is a good example; I don't recall Double
Forte notes as being any better than Gemini notes, and the two series
almost always seemed to use the same (re)masterings.

I suppose one could speculate that Arkiv planned the CD-R release before
the reissue by the original label was announced. Once they had set up
to sell the CD-R, perhaps they kept it in the catalog hoping to recover
some costs even though they probably realize careful customers will buy
the cheaper alternative.

I've wondered about this too. Have you noticed that the ArkivCD
versions of the old Sony Essential Classics series are full price,
even though that was a budget series, and event though many of the
titles are still available from various retailers in the original
issue and at budget price?

Still, I'm glad ArkivCD is there as an option. And in the end it's
not really any different than, say, seeing all those ridiculous prices
from used CDs that some amazon sellers charge: if someone is too
stupid or lazy to realize they can get the same item for cheaper
elsewhere, it's not the seller's fault.

Is it possible the EMI Dvorak/ Giulini re-issue from 2006 is itself
out-of-print? Archiv says is has 3 in stock, Amazon 1. Perhaps that's the
general explanation when it *seems* Archiv is burning to CD-R something that
has been re-issued. I'm just speculating. Another explanation is that they
can make mistakes. I know I do.

I'm just wondering about the opposite...when there are an abundance
of new or like new CDs of a particular title on amazon.com very
reasonably
priced and ArcivCD goes to the trouble of offering their version at
top
dollar?

Maybe its naive thinking on my part, but a little research by Archiv
on whether a
title is truly unavailable at a common sense price would mean less
titles they
would have to manage in their on-line catalog.

I have ordered several ArchivCDs over the past couple of years and
been very
satisfied with them. But this was after searching amazon.com for a new
or like
new copy at a lower cost.

I think someone mentioned the possibility that it might be quite a low cost
thing for Archiv to offer CD-R's. Some are burned only in respnse to an
order, right? If you're going to burn CD's on order and you aren't going to
sell very many, you've got to charge a pretty high price or it wouldn't be
worth doing at all.

I think "possibly" is a more accurate adjective in this case than
"certainly." As I asked, do we know that any of the reissued material is
actually still in print?

....when they could get the original packaging for $5.99 in "Like New"
condition from an Amazon Marketplace seller.

.. or the Gemini reissue new for $7.99

I suspect the licensing costs are on the other end (after there are
sales) and so there is just the initial setup costs involved. (Ripping
an original CD and scanning the artwork & entering it into their
production workflow).

That's one of the few abbreviations here that I got immediately.
Maybe the expression itself is not real English (and a very literal translation
from another language).
But another possibility is that you don't /want/ to understand it.

Me too. In addition, I believe that there are ArchivCD issues that have not been
available elsewhere. Some of the Guarneri SQ RCAs, for example.

Not dialect. Probably a mental block. 'IOU' is a common construction
(even my spelling dictionary accepts it), representing sounds rather
than initials. Habituation gets one started out wrong when confronted by
'IOW'.

I would store all the masters as ISO files on a server and use those
to burn the CDs on an on-demand basis. As to how they get the content
initially, probably either a physical CD, a copy, or an image file

My first thought was that you were from Virginia, as the area I lived in
there for 20 years had a Portsmouth and an Isle of Wight. The Old
Dominion being so fiercely independent and all, it seems odd they named
so much of it after stuff they'd left back in England.

I'm new here, so can I ask a simple question?

I've used ArkivMusic mail order for some CDs that aren't available

worthwhile for items that are otherwise unavailable, so long as you
don't mind packaging that's a bit below par.

Is that a fair summary?
