The vinyl would present a slight problem fitting in my CD player. Just
another glowing example of a great recording just rotting away in a vault
somewhere.
I am, of course, assuming Sony haven't released this onto CD.

No such luck Ray. Another of my lost BASF Chrome tapes I fear. It was a
fantastic , romantic performance, demonstrating that Delius is not just for
British Orchestras or conductors. another disc that Sony have buried.

Actually it has been released on CD with "Brigg Fair," "Dance
Rhapsody No. 2," and "In a Summer Garden" and coupled with some
Vaughan Williams (Sony SBK 62645).

While Sony may be run by cretins, they do a few things right - its on
the
Sony Essential Classics 62645 coupled with some Vaughan Williams
pieces.

Delius - all with Philadelphia/Ormandy

Brigg Fair, an English rhapsody for orchestra
Dance Rhapsody No 2 for orchestra, RT vi/22
On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring for small orchestra
In a Summer Garden for orchestra, RT vi/17

Vaughan Williams

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis for strings
Fantasia on "Greensleeves"
both Ormandy

Lark Ascending, The, for violin & orchestra
with the Cleveland Orchestra/Lane

Hope this helps.

Can't comment on the Delius (not my cup . . .), but the Ormandy
VW items are superb. I know of no better Tallis Fantasy, and
that includes the fine Barbirolli recording.

I posted my reply in RMC yesterday, that this has been reissued on a
Sony Essential Classics CD, for about $7. Worth every penny, I bought
it just recently, the remasterings are beautiful. Maybe not as great as
Beecham or Marriner, but very good on the whole, with an OK perf of
V-W's Tallis Fantasia.

The reissue programs are the best things about Sony these days. Should
I say the *surviving* reissue programs?

This was mis-posted - what do others think of this opinion?

Hello all,

Just listened to a really ecstatic Delius, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. The
works conducted here are (on vinyl) : 'On Hearing the First Cockoo in
Spring', 'In a Summer Garden', 'Brigg Fair', and A Dance Rhapsody No.2. This
is one of the best Delius recordings IMO. The playing is far from
sentimental, but really intens and passioned in the instrumental colours.
The recording is wonderfully realistic; close your eyes and you fancy
yourself in a concerthall in 5th row. The CBS 61426 (Classics) recording is
from appr. 1974. Couldn't help to be so enthusiastic, just got a bit carried
away...

Thanks to all those who have confirmed that this Ormandy Delius/RVW is on a
Sony Essential Classics CD.

Fine playing and recording, and in some ways (brass section, recording) even
better than the amazing Beecham (EMI). I do feel that Ormandy misses some of
the magical phrasing that Beecham does so magnificently (e.g. opening of
Dance Rhap and Cuckoo, and Brigg Fair - rehearsal 34-35/Universal Ed) and
that some individual solo playing (not de Lancie's superb oboe playing) is
not up to the Royal Phil's level (flute and horn in particular).

Kind regards,
