What kind of quality are these recordings? Good or bad transfers or remasters?I'm contemplating getting a future release of Horenstein recordings (from Unicorn
releases).

Scribendum have also come out with a 13-CD set of quite a few of Rene Leibowitz's Reader's Digest recordings, including his complete Beethoven cycle, and the same question applies as to the transfers ...

I got the Horenstein set, which is licensed from the holders of the rights to the now-defunct Unicorn label, dirt-cheap from BRO. What I've heard so far sounds like it's from master tapes, and the packaging is "original jacket" style within the box. I haven't heard anything else from this label, though, and can't vouch for other releases.

dosn't mention any additional work...

Years ago I aquired some of their Nikolayeva discs....If memory serves I was happy with the sound, for what that is worth. Have generally always thought of Scribendum as one of the better niche labels.

IIRC, Jascha Horenstein said these were licensed from Unicorn, but not remastered.

I have two Scribendum sets: (1) The Beethoven symphonies conducted by Rene
Leibowitz, and (2) "The Art of Mravinsky in Moscow 1965 & 1972."

The Beethoven set sounds very good to me, but I've read that some listeners
prefer the Chesky remasters.
I haven't heard them to make a comparison.

The Mravinsky set contains two single-layer SACDs (cannot be played on a
normal CD player, and each disc has over 4 hours of music if I remember
that correctly). I once had the Hindemith "Harmonie der Welt" Symphony on
an EMI/HMV pressing. The SACDs sound better, but that's based
on memory.

Based on only these two items, I cannot make a global assessment of
Scribendum's transfers; but these two seem pretty good.

Geez, whoever designed that web site should be strung up by the thumbs.
White text on black background, artsy-fartsy design...

Add my voice to a general satisfaction with their Nikolaeyva Beethoven sonatas.

I hsve the Scribendum Svetlanov set. The discs all sound fine- most of them recorded in Russia, with characteristic USSRSO sound. They at least as good as any other discs from pre-digital Melodiya. Mostly they say, when they do say, remastered at Abbey Road (formerly EMI I suppose).

Scribendum also has the same material on a 7-CD set.

Two other Scribendum sets not mentioned that I'm glad to have are The Art of Konwitschny, a 13 CD set with his Beethoven and Schumann cycles, Bruckner 3 & 5, etc. and The Art of Casadesus, a 30 CD set which appears to contain all or at least most of Robert Casadesus's recordings on Sony.

There are usually used, fairly priced copies of various Scribendum boxes at Disk Union in Tokyo, in case anyone finds themselves in Shibuya or Shinjuku, which reminds me of their Schuricht box, which I bought there years ago.

At this writing, there are 26 Scribendum items, including the previously mentioned Casadesus, Horenstein, and Leibowitz sets, available for bargain prices from Berkshire Record Outlet (broinc). I also like the collection of Lili Kraus's Concert Hall recordings.

That comment was probably made by Misha Horenstein, the Maestro's cousin, who is an expert on Horenstein's recorded legacy.

What!? You're not into necromancy? Remember Rosemary Brown? (If not, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary_Brown_%28spiritualist%29 .) :-)

These bargain prices are noticeably higher than the prices at hmv.co.jp, even though the shipping cost is higher from Japan (shipped to Florida, that is.)

Right, I should have mentioned this alternative.

Yakov, I take your meaning. If you are communicating with the dead, ask if he's still angry about getting stuck with Tchaikovsky 6.
