John Berky's Bruckner site has an extremely rare item for download at
the moment - an NHK transcription disc of Lovro von Matacic conducting
Bruckner's Te Deum. This was a work he often did in concert (I heard
him conduct it with the Philharmonia in what was one of his last London
concerts - paired with Bruckner's Ninth Symphony), but this Japanese
performance from 1968 is - I think - the only surviving recording of a
Matacic performance of the Te Deum, and has never been released
commercially.

Here's the link:

interesting release, Matacic was an excellent conductor - great in
Bruckner...his #7 with CzPO is one of my very favorites, #9 and #3
[Philharmonia] are very fine also.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I continue to be fascinated by the Japanese embrace of
Bruckner. Maestro Asahina has, if I'm not mistaken,
at least two recorded cycles.

My recollection of the offerings at those well-
stocked Tokyo CD stores is that there was a
heavy dose of Germanic repetoire with no
lack of Bruckner symphonies.

There might be a musico-sociological study
here for some aspiring PhD student.

Some of this could have a historical basis
(e.g. the pioneering Japanese musicians,
such as H. Konoye, had connections
with Germanic traditions), but I think there
is more to it than just that.

Similarly, S. Ozawa, who studied in Berlin.

Two full cycles plus countless individual issues. Only Henry Fogel has
heard them all.

Speaking of Matacic's Bruckner 7th, I heard it after Schuricht's 7th
from The Hague, and HvK on EMI, so Matacic sounded somewhat puny by
comparison.

Bill Kasimer posted a favorable review of a new transfer of a live 1959
Bayreuth Lohengrin with Von Matacic on Orfeo on another forum: he
enthused about both the performance and the improved sound. His post
turned into a Von Matacic thread. Perhaps M. Makropulos can be
persuaded to repost the surprisingly ample little discography he posted
there. I posted the following and the addendum that follows:

Somebody else had said:

> I like von Matacic's conducting very much. If I didn't know who it was,
> you might be able to convince me I was hearing one of the great German
> conductors: Krauss, Kleiber, Klemperer, Knappertsbusch, Kempe, Karajan
> (lots of 'K's' there).

Von Matacic was not only incomparable but also vastly superior to the
more superficial Karajan, who stands out like a sore thumb on this
list, belonging, as he did, to a later generation and exhibiting a very

different approach from Von Matacic and all these other K's. On the
basis of the never-quite-exciting-enough standard recommendations with
Kempe (including the EMI Meistersinger), I would even say that Von
Matacic was superior to him. Von Matacic was also adept in a far
greater range of repertory than Knappertsbusch, whose forays into
Classical repertory are something of a joke. A Croatian - there should

be diacritical marks over each of the last three letters of his name -
Von Matacic was born in 1899 and, like Clemens Krauss, he began his
career as a member of the Vienna Choirboys. Von Matacic began
conducting after earning his spurs as a chorus master in various opera
houses, as conductors always should and at one time invariably did. At

various points in his career, he held permanent positions with the
Frankfurt Opera and in Dresden: with both the Dresden State Opera and
the Staatskapelle. Probably best known as a conductor of Bruckner, he
conducted everything somewhere in Europe (and eventually Japan).
Unheard of by those who only recognize the handful of big names the
major labels have managed to turn into superstars, he was revered by
musicians.

Von Matacic's discography, live and studio, is rather odd, lunging as
it does from Monteverdi to Spontini to Puccini: he was far less
incurious than your average superstar conductor. There's a very
strange live "expressionist" Monteverdi Vespers and a magnificently
conducted live recording of Spontini's Fernando Cortez, the recording
that made me a convert. Later encounters have not disappointed. In
addition to the Lohengrin, there are live recordings of Rienzi and
Elektra. There's a Beethoven Violin Concerto with Szeryng; the Grieg
and Schumann Concertos with Richter; The Four Last Songs and Arabella
scenes with Schwarzkopf; a recording of The Merry Widow with
Schwarzkopf; and Italian opera: Pagliacci with Corelli, Fanciulla with

Nilsson, a live Chénier with Tebaldi and Corelli from Vienna. He was
also the conductor when La Scala mounted Handel's Hercules with an
improbable cast headed by Corelli and Schwarzkopf.

Von Matacic's recordings of Bruckner are greatly admired, not least
by a group of seasoned Bruckner-ites with 50 recordings of every
symphony who regularly post on another forum some of us frequent. Of
his recordings of Bruckner symphonies, I know a magnificent 7th best.
He's also at the helm of one of the most impressive recordings of the
Eroica out there in an overcrowded field.

I don't know this celebrated Lohengrin, but, without having heard it,
Von Matacic's name at the helm would be the most enticing thing about
it to me.

A few addenda to my post. Speaking of Von Matacic's opera
recordings, there are also:

Der Freischütz with Claire Watson and Rudolf Schock (Eurodisc)
Entführung with Wunderlich (Myto)

and this curiosity:

I maestri cantori by Riccardo Wagner with Taddei (Sachs), Infantino
(Walther), Rizzoli (Eva), and Capecchi (Beckmesser); RAI Torino, 1962

Naxos and Swiss EMI have both reissued the Arabella/Four Last with
Schwarzkopf on CD. For more on LvM, see these URL's:

A friend of mine writes to me as follows:

Matacic conducted the Bruckner Te Deum and Ninth Symphony during the
1972 Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Zagreb Phil). Courtesy of the EBU,
these have been broadcast by the BBC Radio 3.

don't you mean that vK and Schuricht sounded bloated and flabby by
comparison?? :-)

and David - yes, that Matacic "Eroica" is really splendid, one of the
best in a crowded field.

The Bruckner 9 was broadcast a few weeks ago on every station that
carries EBU's nighttime program, including the BBC 3 and a number of
other channels across Europe. I listened to it and found it singularly
unimpressive. I say that as a Matacic fan. Yes, there were some nice
moments, but compared to his Czech Philharmonic recording the Zagreb
performance lacked the beauty, the intonation, and the weight of sound,
not to mention the control of balances and the ability to finish off
phrases with subtlety. The conducting just didn't sound all that great
in the face of such obstacles. Had this been my first exposure to
Matacic it might have been my last.

David Gable suggested I might repost the list of Matacic recordings I
posted on another forum, so here it is. This has no claims whatsoever
to completeness - it is simply a list of the Matacic recordings I

interest.

Yes, but the show is archived for a week so you can listen to it any
time of day. Plus you can fast-forward past all the music you're not
interested in, when you listen to the archived stream.

That's very true, of course - but did you hear the broadcast of the Te

No, I missed it. I'm not sure how, because I've been following the
programs relatively closely for the last couple of months, but perhaps
I was away when it was broadcast. Travel does things to one's listening
plans!

I do note that there's another Bruckner Te Deum (not Matacic) coming up
on that show soon, and there's an intriguing Honeck Bruckner 8 still in
the archive that I hope to catch up with before it's too late. Honeck
has been a favorite of mine lately.

Because of the archive I never listen live anymore...there are too many
broadcasts going on at the same time that are more "urgent" from my
perspective. That show, Notturno (or "Through the Night", as BBC calls
it), is really well programmed, however, and they do sometimes pull
some interesting stuff out of the older archives like that Matacic
broadcast. There was a great old Juilliard SQ concert on there a couple
of weeks ago, an old Pletnev recital, etc., but the highlight is all
the recent concerts with less-well-known artists that turn out to be
exceptionally fine. The downside is that BBC does not use the very best
streaming quality, so you have to scale back your expectations.

Thanks you Mr. Makopolus for the Matacic material - you are one of the
few worthwhile posters on this list; you input is always useful and
straightforward. Again, thanks.

You're very kind, John. I'm glad it's of some interest.

As I said, it's not trying to be complete, but I did leave out one very
well known EMI recording that should have been mentioned: Pagliacci,
with Gobbi, Amara and Corelli and La Scala forces (now coupled with
Santini's Cav. in a budget box).
