Which one would be the one to get ? Did Brilliant go inexpensive on the
packaging/notes ? Any difference with the original Denon releases ?

Opinions appreciated, thanks in advance...

Neither. For slightly more money you can acquire far superior
cycles by Kubelik (DG) or Bernstein (Sony).

I agree with Marc. Inbal is just ok...given the price differential I would
go with the Dvorak or the Mahler. To my ears, the sound on the Bernstein
Century Series for the Mahler Cycle is a BIG improvement.

Since no onw is answering, here is my opinion. I do not have
the said Brilliant nor Denon set, though.

1. Inbal items issued from Brilliant (Mahler, Berlioz, Ravel) are
all lisenced from Denon. I assume Brilliant uses the same masters
for reissues.

2. Most of Inbal CDs on Denon were surpably recorded and got
very good reviews from critics at the time of the original issue
(at least in Japan).

3. Brilliant issues usually come with minimal packaging and
booklets. Do not expect nice notes. The CDs of Inbal Mahler set
are in paper sleve, which is in a paper box, which means a set
takes less space.

So, if I were you, I would buy a Brilliant set becuase the sound
is same and much less expensive. The Berlioz set is still on
my want-to-buy list.

Thanks for the suggestions... I am interested in the Inbal cycle... as a
long time Mahlerite, I own the two Bernsteins, the DG Kubelik and I'm
building the Audite Kubelik... I've heard some good things about the Inbal
so naturally I'm curious... then I found out it was possible to get it in
two versions, that's the reason for my question...

Thanks for your suggestions anyway... I do agree that they are indeed
superlative cycles...

Thanks...

hmm... space is starting to become and issue... that's one for the Brilliant
set... if there are not sonic differences ( exactly the same masters, I
assume) then the questions is to decide wheter the packaging and notes is
worth the $20 dollars difference ( $60 for used Inbal, $40 for the new
Brilliant set)... food for thought...

Thanks again,

V

The Berlioz box came with a booklet containing all the lyrics and some
historical information about the works (very limited). There was no
information about the recording artists themselves, and these are also not
the same texts that accompanied the Denon releases (I bought the Harold used
years ago).

The Berlioz set is definitely a good buy. The sound is very good, and Inbal
knows how to give the composer the final word. His Roméo & Juliette is the
first recording that made sense to me. His Harold en Italie is very
different from my other recording (Bernstein): it allows the story to be
develloped more, where Bernstein seems only interested in the music.
L'Enfance du Christ also sounds very good, although I haven't been able to
compare it to Cluytens which I bought recently. Damnation de Faust is less
interesting. I haven't listened to the Te Deum or the Requiem very well yet.

I've got Inbal's Mahler 5 on Denon and think the performance is just so so and
that the sound is a little muddy, although it does improve if you turn the
volume way up.

Inbal's Te Deum was one of my top recommendations for his inclusion of two
movements, little-heard and (I believe) previously unrecorded. But now my
recommendation goes to Nelson on Virgin, an even better performance too.
