Teacher of Gilels and Richter. I have a CD on which he plays some great
Scriabin.

Not in good sound. I have a few 'Talents of Russia' CDs issued by
Russian CD; interesting stuff.

He's one of those Great Russian Pianists who is greater than all of the other
Great Russian Pianists. There are several of these.

There have been lots of prior Neuhaus releases on CD. On Russian Disc,
in the BMG Melodiya Russian pianists series, on Russian Compact
Disc/Talents of Russia, Preiser, a Denon edition, etc. Notably he can
also be heard on a disc called Scriabine and the Scriabinians. Neuhaus
was a great Scriabin player.
He was also reputed to be a great player of many other things. His
student Richter adored his Kreisleriana, for instance, and I believe
said it was why he didn't play the work himself.
As you probably know, HN was also the teacher of not just Gilels, but
Lupu, Zhukov, Virsaladze, and countless other notables.
The recorded Kreisleriana doesn't quite convince me. Neither does a disc
worth of Beethoven sonatas. When he got in the studio, he tended to act
like a guy who thought of himself as a full-time pedagogue and part-time
pianist. This shows in both the chops and the thinking.
Generally a fantastic tone comes through. He was a terrific Chopin
player, with a Barcarolle in particular that is splendid. There's also a
strong batch of Brahms intermezzi.
I'm sure there are many other gems. But I don't plan on buying an
immense "complete recordings."
