Are Biddulph and Tahra virtually inactive?

I want to discuss whether to upload my holdings on these two labels. Also
whether to upload the Glenn Gould from Music & Arts, since that label has
delisted all of them.

I stated that I was refraining from uploading recordings from small ACTIVE
labels because I did not want to discourage their good efforts to make
available to the public, even though they are not under European
copyright. My overall aim to do what I can to proliferate great old
recordings.

However, it seems that Biddulph and Tahra are no longer making FRESH
conversions to any significant extent. Biddulph now sells a grand total of
28 recordings. Tahra also maintains a catalog, but the site is in such a
mess that the public cannot get them in most cases.

All labels can keep the entire catalog available as mp3 downloads. It is a
simple matter to do so. The reason seems to be that their owners are
either getting old or otherwise disinclined to make sales. The process of
aging will eventually affect us all.

If I upload whatever is in my own collection, this will make them
available to anyone who wants to gain entertainment and enlightenment. It
is important to maintain continuity, as the shift away from classical
music and, especially older recordings of classical music, proceeds apace.
I wish I knew how many of each older record has ever been sold over all
the years.

THREE MORE LABELS

MUSIC & ARTS seems to still be active. It sells seven albums items in my
collection on CDs and three more as mp3 downloads. These ten compare to 38
albums I have altogether, which include several with Gould. Since the
label has lost all interest in this great pianist, I would like to upload
the Goulds but only the Goulds.

Go down for details.

NAXOS is quite active, and there have been 17 new releases of historical
recordings during 2012 June through 2013 May, several quite valuable
(though I am not big on Heifetz and Kreisler). I have 29 albums in my
collection. I shall upload nothing.

SYMPOSIUM has released seven in spring of this year. Seven of the ten are
still in its catalog. I shall upload nothing.

There are 22 more labels I counted as small and active, but I am not going
to worry about them.

My earlier listing, to which I added for Music & Arts and Symposium an
asterisk to indicate that they are being sold by the label:

If I recall correctly, TAHRA had announced the release of
Scherchen's ILYA MOUROMETZ, but that was never produced.

Does anyone know if that is still a project under development
at TAHRA or at UNIVERSAL?

Biddulph is still commercially available, for streaming and download, from a Norwegian recording label and website called ContraClassics (note: not record label - it produces not physical discs but recordings for digital distribition):

http://www.contraclassics.com/

The site is still in development but it already offers most of the Biddulph catalogue, by agreement with the owners, and is aiming to sign up other labels.

Dicsclosure: I have met the founder and owner of ContraClassics and am helping him, at the moment in an unpaid capacity.

Tahra is still a going concern.

One bit of "help": if I have to "sign up" before I can even glance at a
catalogue of the available offerings (aside from a single introducotory
selection), he's not going to get my business.

"A temporary measure, for technical reasons"
doesn't cut the mustard.
This is a meaningless and unaccomodating response
of the kind we expect from politicians.
It's not an explanation.

I hope you find that more helpful.

Tahra is very much an ongoing concern --- many of their releases may
be O.O.P., as their policy is to lease tapes from the original owners
and a condition of this is often a limited edition or limited time
period before the rights return to the owners (usually German and
French radio archives.)

The past year has been particularly active for Tahra, a lot of
interesting releases and their design aesthetic has improved
noticeably:

Isn't that Neveu CD a re-reissue?

I still wonder whether anybody can definitively ID the artist for the
Toscanini issue:

I think it's Lynd Ward, but I'd like to be sure.

Just read Mr Forman's most puzzling statement, "MUSIC & ARTS seems to still be active. It sells seven albums items in my collection on CDs and three more as mp3 downloads. These ten compare to 38 albums I have altogether, which include several with Gould. Since the label has lost all interest in this great pianist, I would like to upload the Goulds but only the Goulds." Actually, M&A sells a catalog of over 500 albums; it produces quite a few new releases; and yrs ago it was compelled by Sony to delete all its Gould recordings because Sony claimed it owned Gould (all Gould) from 1955 onward...
Also, we offer not just 3 mp3s but over 500 on Classics Online! -- Fred Maroth, M&A

Hi Frank,
Biddulph records are not producing any new records. OOP recordings are sold at fantastic prices. Please upload Biddulph records. Maybe you have Erica Morini's records?
