You wanted an RMCR replacement? Here it is. The main drawback is that it is an empty forum. If you are interested in joining a party that is already happening, I don't know what to tell you. But there's no reason all of us can't start posting here:

You mean Marc S and Nefesh Bar Yochai have not posted to it? ;-)

Cheers

It's a closed group, not RMCR which is an open group.

Besides, it's being closed by Google in a few days.

I set it so anyone can post. Have you tried? If you have a Google account, you should be free to chat. If you want something as open as Usenet, I don't know what that might be. The openness of Usenet is one of the reasons Google is dropping it, I imagine.

> Besides, it's being closed by Google in a few days.

That's incorrect. Google Groups is not going away. Usenet representation in Google Groups is.

Google was going to be cut off from Usenet, if they didn't leave
voluntarily. Other server operators had had enough of their nonsense.
Google themselves were/are, by far, the largest source of spam on
Usenet. That they're trying to spin some sort of opposite statement
is typical of our times.

My supposition was wrong, and I've read nothing from Google that indicated one way or the other. I guess I had the right idea, just the wrong culprit. I appreciate the correction.

Posts not visible to non-members makes it a closed group,
just like yahoo, just like facebook.

Which could be a good, non-pluted thing.

Cheers

I'm getting nervous. I've got a week to figure this hypertext-transfer-protocol-Usenet-plus-plus out!

I went and paid for Easy News, and with the help of Thunderbird, managed
after 100's of what seemed hours, to get through all the mess that these
communication protocols present. What utterly boring and utterly
confusing stuff. Thankfully after installing Thunderbird, the bird
sorted out a lot of the problems by itself. Still not 100% sure of what
is happening. I chose the closest servers to me, but may yet try the two
regions in the US, the West Coast servers being the closest. It is all
bit of a nightmare.

You also have to apply to Easy News in order to be able to post. Still,
even so, I am still not sure whether some replies of mine have arrived.
There was one about Temirkanov that I saw arrive.

One must connect to multiple servers in order to gain coverage.

Remember that usenet servers are completely independent of
one another. No server is required to host all the groups, and
no server is required to store any messages for any length of
time. Usenet servers can even be set up as simple message
multiplexers with no local storage.

The main benefit of using Google as an internet server is/was
that Google inherited the Deja News archive, and that Google
has far more storage capacity than other usenet providers,
can be accessed from anywhere on the planet, and has huge
access bandwidth.

Cheers

Götterdämmerung can certainly put an end to your
nerves! ;-)

I'm not sure if Thunderbird will allow me to choose multiple servers. I
seem to be ok-ish on the present one, and will check out TBird a bit
more fully. I could use Easy News to read posts, as they say I could
read stuff inside their application, but inside seems too protocolly-ish
for me. TBird buffers me from all that nasty environment.

Ray, there is NO reason to connect to multiple servers for text Usenet. If
you are using Easy News and they are hosting this group (which they are), you
will see all of the posts unless there is some type of server hiccup, which
is very unusual. Retention is not an issue as storage is so cheap now that
the major providers do not expire articles. So relax and once you get used to
Thunderbird, I’m sure you will never want to go back to the old way of
doing things.

Google does not "close", and indeed cannot close,
internet usenet groups.

Google will stop hosting usenet groups today. This
will not close any groups, it only means Google will
no longer accept messages for posting to usenet
groups.

Cheers!
