I just followed up on the status of the MLP 3 set I had cited in a
previous post. When it initially appeared on Universal's schedule it was
listed as sixty discs. It has been revised to forty, which seems more
realistic.

I don't remember if I said before that it was due in September, but it
is scheduled for October now.

Thanks for the update. I hope that some of the mono recordings will be
included.

Have you heard anything about re-issuing of their SACDs? They are
currently priced very high on the secondary market.

I have not. If I had to guess, I'd say that hope for the future of MLP
in multi-channel and high-res lies with Blu-ray Audio. But I have seen
no actual evidence to that effect.

They were very highly priced on the primary market. I bought two or three, and
that was it. Had they been mid-priced -- as RCA's were -- I'd have bought
more.

Some of the RCA SACDs, including major artists, are still availabe for
circa $12.- each, while the Mercury SACDs are often attached to asking
prices of over $100.- each = absurd.

Nowhere that I know of just yet. But, a while back someone did post on
RMCR a PDF of the Mercury recordings released on CD under the
supervision of WCF in the 1990s. That PDF indicates which of those
recordings were included in MLP 1 and MLP 2. One might safely assume
that the remaining thirty-or-so discs remaining will be in MLP 3. The
fun guessing game we all get to play now is, "What Else?"

Exactly! Will they issue the Roth Quartet recordings of Kodaly and Mozart? Szeryng and Rybar in Bach, Szeryng/Rozhdestvensky in the Sibelius and Prokofiev concerti? Dorati's Schumann 4? Paray 's mono Bolero?

I know these seem like long shots but the non-long shots have already been issued.

And let's not forget the Dorati/Minneapolis Variaciones Concertantes,
Borodin 2nd, Church Windows, Paray's Antar, the remainder of the
Kubelik/Chicago series, etc., etc.

Hopefully it DOES NOT include this:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00005FFLT

The Fine family were very upset when UMG allowed the Japanese to release this on CD a few years ago.

Reminds me (in a way) of a recording I purchased many years
ago of the Dvorak Cello Concerto (hint: On the Everest label;
in stereo; world famous cellist; cover artwork featuring the
flag of Puerto Rico; quickly deleted).

Probably still sought after by collectors for its rarity value
though likely not to actually be played.

Allowed? As though the Japanese ever asked. They prefer to ask for
forgiveness than approval.

Moreover, it wasn't the Fine Family, but Wilma who objected. Also to the
issue of all of the Kubelik recordings.

I'm still waiting for my very first Mercury purchase to make its way into the boxed sets: Handel(Harty)/Dorati/LSO. I'm guessing it'll be in Vol 3.

From Mercury family member Tom Fine (on a different forum) - Point #2 addresses your point Bill:

Hi:

I asked the folks at UMG if they are putting more info out there yet. If so, I'll pass it along.

I can tell you these facts:

1. the rest of the 1990s remasters, those not reissued in Box Sets 1 and 2, are included. So, for the first time, all of the 1990s CDs will be in print at one time.

2. all of the material that Mercury recorded for Philips in 1961 is included, in original Philips USA LP sequences and cover art.

3. there are 10 new remasters, three of which used the revolutionary Plangent Process. All of the remastered material has been out of print for decades.

4. One of the bonus discs is the 1956 mono "1812 Overture" album, the best-selling classical album of the 1950s.

There will also be a third 6-LP box set, and I can say that the cutting by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios was superb. To my ears, they all sound vastly better than the original LPs.

Perhaps a new remastering? Or just an accidental duplication by UMG? Or did Paray
actually record these works twice for Mercury with a very short interval
between?

I'm thinking:
Hungary March = Rakoczy March
Troy's march = Trojan March
Overture "pirate" = Corsair Overture
Carnival ... of Rome = Roman Carnival Overture

SF requires no guess.

Funny. I noticed that too. I was told a little while ago it was a mistake (is same as the CD in volume 1). It was "caught" after the set was sent out for manufacturing. I assume it stay - perhaps "blooper". The cost to redo the booklet, disk numbering on inserts, manufacturing plan, and more are probably prohibitively high when the only savings is one CD per box.

if the WING LP you are referring to is SRW-18054, that is not rechanneled stereo, it is a reissue of Mercury SR-90107. There are a couple of tracks from that LP that were left off when the stereo Paray Wagner CD was created, supplementing the complete reissue of SR-90232. They are: Gotterdammerung: Dawn and Siegfried's Rhine Journey and Parsifal Prelude to Act 1.

The real rechanneled Mercury Wing LPs were: SRW-18015 derived from the 1954 mono Paray-Wagner LP MG-50021 (Lohengrin Act1 & 3 preludes; Meistersinger & Tannhauser Overtures) and SRW-18019 which was from MG-50044 (Flying Dutchman Overture, Parsifal Good Friday Spell, Tristan Prelude & Liebestod and Siegfried's Forest Murmurs again 1954-55 mono only).

We can only hope that if Vol 3 sells well, they will transfer more of the remaining Stereo recordings AND include more from the original Mono-only series. There is plenty left to issue.

The Rakoczy March gets a mention in Arthur Clarke's "A Fall of Moondust" but that's a different SF altogether.

Thanks for making the printer's original of the booklet available.

For those with a list of as-yet unreleased recordings, I noted with disappointment the following statement on Page 128:

". . . this is the final Mercury Living Presence box set. . ."

Is there enough material and/or demand for a (possibly smaller?) Volume 4? Just speculating here.

One of the things we might compile is a list of what is left to release, outside the block of mono-only recordings of which we have some.
