A hitherto unseen silent film clip of Rachmaninoff (with Chaliapin!)
has shown up on YouTube—footage not included in the eight-minute
compilation produced, apparently, in Japan which has been up on
YouTube for several years. Based on the surroundings (it’s not Senar)
and Chaliapin’s appearance, I would guess that the film is made during
one of SR’s summer residencies in La Pavillion at Clairfontaine near
Paris in 1930 or ‘31.

The clip of about a minute is some (or all?) of the film taken by
Feodor's son, the painter Boris Chaliapin (who you will also see in
the clip) which Boris's brother, the actor Feodor Jr., reported as
having been stolen and taken to Russia. Twenty years ago when he
enjoyed brief fame as the grandfather in the movie Moonstruck, Feodor
Jr. mentioned, in an interview, the theft and described the action of
the film as a playlet performed by Rachmaninoff, Chaliapin and their
sons/daughters, with Rachmaninoff playing the role of "the one who
pays”. This may be what we are seeing in the film clip. I’m guessing
that more exists and would be grateful if anyone could shed more light
on the subject.

F. Chaliapin Jr. also appears in the film _The Name of the Rose_,
playing the role of a monk who poisons a manuscript. --E.A.C.
