Chung Myung-hoon is a pianist and a conductor. He is also a brother of the famed violinist
Chung, Myung-wha.

I was wondering...can you find any recordings of his in the US or in Europe? He is such a fame here in
Korea, but all I could find is local labels, made here in Korea.

Much of his fame comes while he was conducting "Bastille Opera." <- I am not really sure of the full name
of this opera theater.

But do many of you listen to him as many Korean media claims?
I listen to classical music a lot, but I would like to reserve my opinion of his musical interpretation for later time.
I would like to see how many of you are familiar with him.

Hi,
I think he (and his sisters) is quite famous here in the US. Reviews are
generally favorable at least. Their CD's (DG & EMI) are also available through
music clubs which should give them some exposure. If you can telnet
cdconnection.com, you should be able to see for yourself which piece are
available.

Myung Whun Chung's London concerts have been generally well received, by
both audience and critics. Much of his work at the Opera Bastille was
also rated highly, although his entrance and exit from that
politics-plagued institution both occured under a cloud. I understand
the only reason he is not engaged more freqently by promoters here is
the fact that his fee has now been raised to "jet-set-super-maestro"
levels, somewhat in advance of his reaching that (disreputable) status
amongst the public at large.

His CD's do good business in Korea, where the media appears to regard
the promotion of home-grown artists as a patriotic duty, thus recording
contracts are not hard to come by.

Is this correct? I thought it was the other way around.
Didn't he record them for Bis and then DG 'borrowed them'?

It's hard to believe, but this is DG's first Otello ever!

You may well be right; I don't know the details of what happened, but
I do know that I'm pissed that Chung didn't complete the set!

Not a match for Blomstedt's SFSO recordings, repackaged last year as a
three-disc box at midprice.

Chung worked his way up through the orchestral (and recording) ladder,
first with recordings with provincial orchestras on budget labels (ASV?),
then some distinguished Mozart and Nielsen with the Gothenburg Symphony
(?) on BIS, then a series with the Orchestra of the Bastille Opera for DG.
He has gained wide respect as a conductor of various 20th century masters
such as Nielsen and Messiaen, and there is his opera to consider, as mentioned
above. He has also recorded a few Beethoven Piano Trios with sister Kyung
Wha and 2nd sister (forget the name) at the cello, for EMI.

I agree- Boring ^H^H^H^H Blomstedt is indeed no match for Chung. ;-)

Hello...
Reviews here in Hong Kong are also positive towards his recordings..
I am grateful that I have attended one of his concerts, conducting the
Philharmonia Orchestra (UK). He is energetic, with well control over the
orchestra, I like his performance.
FYI, he was conducting Mahler Sym. #5 and Rachmaninov -- Rhapsody on
a theme by Paganini.
Best Regards
Ronnie

He will be recording a Shostakovich set with Phladelphia. The 4th is already
taped, with the 7th set for this season. These will be the first
Philadelphia recordings for DG.
