Anyone know anything about this violinist? Very tragic story. Here's what I found on Google, through second-hand postings on message boards.

"In 1948, Shigeo Watanabe made his Japanese debut when he was only seven years old. Five years later, he gave his first public performance, playing the Khachaturian Violin Concerto. Jascha Heifetz, visiting Japan in 1954, heard Shigeo Watanabe’s playing and was very impressed. Heifetz arranged for Shigeo to join the Julliard School of Music, in the U.S.A., under Ivan Galamian’s guidance.

"Shigeo came to Juilliard by himself at age 14, without speaking a word of English. The combination of the language barrier and the ostricization he received as a young foreign prodigy led to his desire to leave Juilliard and return to Japan.

"Apparently Shigeo was unable to relinquish his 'Auer' approach and the result was a serious conflcit with Galamian's approach. Thus, the hapless youth returned to Japan and never played the violin again."
