The DVD set is from the mid-70's and is performed entirely with the VPO.
The 80's DG CD set is with three orchestras (RCO 1,4,9; VPO
5,6,8,10(1); NYP 2,3,7). As for the recorded sound, they're both very
good. Perhaps I'd give the slight nod to the CD set, but only slightly.
The biggest difference is where each set finds Bernstein in his creative
evolution. The CD set is very much late Bernstein - broader tempi,
bigger gestures. The DVD set is somewhere between the younger, fleeter
Bernstein of the Sony set and the more later, more indulgent Bernstein
of the DG CD set. For that reason, many prefer the DVD set.
Personally, I need to have them all :)
