Bernstein's two Mahler Symphonies sets on DGG

Are the two Bernstein DGG Mahler Symphonies sets, the one on DVD and the
one on CD, taken from the same performances?

If the answer is "no" which set was recorded later, and which one has the
best recorded sound?

The DVD set is from the mid-70's and is performed entirely with the VPO.
The 80's DG CD set is with three orchestras (RCO 1,4,9; VPO
5,6,8,10(1); NYP 2,3,7). As for the recorded sound, they're both very
good. Perhaps I'd give the slight nod to the CD set, but only slightly.

The biggest difference is where each set finds Bernstein in his creative
evolution. The CD set is very much late Bernstein - broader tempi,
bigger gestures. The DVD set is somewhere between the younger, fleeter
Bernstein of the Sony set and the more later, more indulgent Bernstein
of the DG CD set. For that reason, many prefer the DVD set.
Personally, I need to have them all :)

I watched most of the DVD set, and thought it didn't measure up to the
youthful zest he had in his NYPO set. Haven't heard the DG set at all.
There's so much Mahler out there, and good Mahler too.

Have to agree.

I'm not a fan of LB's DG Mahler. I find it terribly indulgent.

His Sony set is aces, especially in the Carnegie Hall remastering
which has been reissued in a budget box with original LP covers (ASIN:
B005SJIP1E)

I agree. I haven't heard/seen any of the DVDs but have experienced
most of those performances in other, lesser formats, but generally
it's my favorite of the three. However, there are reasons to prefer
any of the three cycles and that makes all three worth having.

The DVD set from the mid-seveties is the best LB Mahler. Not as indulgent as the later DG set, and ith a much better orchestra and recording team than the NYPO set.

This is not correct. The 2nd is with the London Symphony; Das Lied von
der Erde is with the Israel Philharmonic.

I might have agreed with you until I bought and listened to the
Carnegie Hall remastering of the Sony recordings. I would say the
orchestras and the recording team on the Sony set are better than what
DG came up with.

I'd certainly take the newer 1 & 5; it's more of a toss-up for the
others, especially when it comes to the NYPO vs NYPO choices.

I agree with you about 1 & 5. To me the interpretations are so
different with respect to the others that they either drive the choice
or one simply needs both.
