A few questions:

1. Anyone know if there will be any more CD releases in this wonderful
series?

2. To date, how many have been released? By my count, there are 13,
with the most recent one coming in 2010 of late recordings of Chopin.

3. Was there a volume 8? I can't seem to find one, yet there appears
to be two labeled volume 6; the one with Beethoven PC 3 and 5; and the
one with the Delius PC and various short solo works by Debussy, Ravel,
etc.

Thanks!

Yes, Volume 8 is Naxos 8.110776, issued October 2004. Audio
restoration producer: Ward Marston. Special thanks to Donald Manildi.

You are welcome! What do you like about Moiseiwitsch? Or more
accurately, what recordings, CD's, performances? Can't say I'm very
familiar with this pianist.

I love his Chopin (all three Naxos CDs) and his Schumann. The second
volume of the Naxos series with Weber-Tausig is also wonderful.

What I like about him is his style. He plays in the old manner (what
he refers to as The Grand Style), lots of rubato, great tone and an
overall beautiful way with almost everything he played. This approach
didn't always work (I recall his Beethoven and his Tchaikovsky not
being so succesful), but when it did work, it was special.

You may wish to read something he wrote about Playing in The Grand
Style:

Since Ward did the mastering on these CDs, I called Marston Records to
ask about the possibility of future Moiseiwitsch CDs. I was told that
they are finished with his recordings and thus, they don't expect
there to be any more in this series.

He sounds differently live than in many of his recordings , I think ,
here all live on Arbiter cd :

Arbiter 120: Moiseiwitsch in recital
Benno Moiseiwitsch, piano.

Chopin: Ballade in F, Nocturne in G, Scherzo in B-flat minor, Preludes
in F & B-flat minor
Bach-Liszt: Fantasie & Fugue in G minor; Schubert-Liszt: Hark Hark,
the Lark!
Chopin-Liszt: My Joys
Wagner-Liszt: Tannhauser Overture
Stravinsky: Etude op.7, no.4.

I think his Pictures at an Exhibition on Naxos (He recorded it again years later for American Decca) is one of the great performances. It's the most musical "Pictures" I know as you constantly notice what great music it is rather than admiring the pianist's chops.

I also like almost everything he recorded. He always plays beautifully, with great finish and great insight into the music. He had a fabulous tone.

I heard him do Beethoven's Emperor concerto live on his last concert tour of the US -- I think it was 1960 or 61 and even in the acoustical nightmare of Lewinsohn Stadium you could hear how exceptional he was.

Do his recordings justice to the way he sounded in 1960/61 - to his tone?

There is also his 1951 Kreutzer with Heifetz, which I transferred for
Naxos Historical 8.110990 as part of a Heifetz series, coupled with
the Franck Sonata with Rubinstein and the Brahms D minor with Kapell.

How many times did he record the Kreutzer?

The live Chopin Nocturne op 37/ 2 , on Arbiter, is very fine I think.

Twice. There's a previously-unpublished 1949 version, also with
Heifetz, on APR 5610, transferred from HMV shellac tests from
Moiseiwitsch's collection. It is said to have been rejected by
Heifetz because the recording balance didn't favor the violin
sufficiently to his taste.

I've often wondered something about that recording. The notes state
that there had been an earlier recording, which Heifetz rejected because
the violin wasn't dominant enough. The result seems to push
Moiseiwitsch way into the background, hardly, I think what Beethoven
had in mind. What I've wondered is why that earlier version wasn't
the one included, if it still existis, that is. Neither of the
other two works included have that sort of balance problem -- in fact,
that Franck is really terrific, probably my favorite performance of
the work. [When I refer to a "problem", I want to be clear I'm only
commenting on the performance, not at all on the excellent-sounding
Naxos release.]

Sorry, Henk. I couldn't really tell you. Lewisohn Stadium seated thousands of people and had a terrible amplification system. In the cheap seats, where I sat you would hear everything twice because of a pronounced echo. In spite of all this, his tone seemed exceptionally warm and clear. The recordings of him that I have -- mostly transfers from the 78 era -- do sound like him. I can't claim, however, to have an exceptional memory of someone I heard 50 years ago. All I know is that he made an exceptional impression on me and even today he is one of my favorite pianists.

Dear Martin, many thanks for your reply. Good to hear that the 78 transfers
do remind you of his live performance. On these transfers he also sounds
exceptionally warm and clear, IMO.

These are included complete in The Liszt Legacy box from DG. The tape

the same time as the GPE was being worked on, covering the costs in
that project. If you don't have that box, don't hesitate, as the BM

It's a great box. I didn't hesitate a moment when it was released. BM's tone
slightly disappointed me. It lacked the warmth of his other recordings -
even his BBC recordings.
