There's a cruel irony to that anecdote. During the process of rehearsing
for the premiere, Sergei Shirinsky, the founding cellist of the Beethoven
Quartet, suffered a heart attack while waiting for a bus and died. The
premiere went to the Tanayev Quartet instead.

The Danish Quartet, also on ECM, has the measure of it. My other
favorites, the early Fitzwilliam and yes, the Beethovens, are also
up there - but the former can only be had in the complete set -
still worth having - and an individual disc of the latter, which
has been issued on Melodiya and Consonance, is all but unobtainable.
It can, however, be downloaded. (Beware that Praga disc, which claims
to be a live performance - it's the studio recording, presented in mono!)
