I have not previously heard the Weber 2nd Piano Sonata, and as music
not one I'd
return to, but Cortot's performance is remarkable. Seems at or near
the top of
his game here, perhaps "too perfect" and calculated, but an
extraordinary grasp,
control, and expression of every nuance of tempo, dynamics, phrasing
and
structure , great tone, especially considering what I assume were
limited takes:

I'm not sure today's too often "linear" and "literal" generation could
play this piece.

Dunno about the current generation, but pianists of my generation have
recorded versions that I like better than this. You might alter your
opinion of the work if you heard one of them. I'll see what I can do,

Garrick Ohlsson (Arabesque) makes a good general case for Weber's piano
sonatas, but I don't know whether the music can overcome Rugby's special
tastes.

Vedernikov in Sonata #1 is the most persuasive performance I've heard of
any of the four. (Must be a bit before Bob's generation, though.)

PS: Thanks for the link, Rugby. I had missed this recording. Youngrok
Lee says it's from 1939. Apparently now available via Naxos Historical.

You're welcome, always glad to help an Oakland "neighbor". I just
happened upon it, more impressed that Cortot was in good form than
with the music, but I was not intending to be dismissive of Weber as I
know only this Sonata # 2 now, I suspect not his strongest, and I do
enjoy his picos. I have always gravitated to Hummel, but should
probably get better educated about Weber.

After all, I have spent many hours over, around, and on some
occaisions nearly under , my Weber grill.

Regards, and the very best of the Holiday Season to you and yours,
Steve !!

I dont know what kinds of "special tastes"you are rererring to. I
remember hearing it on he radio, his playing does not have any special
virtues. at best it is OK. Cortot is such a marvelous musician, in
this case he plays most of the notes. No comparison, Ohlsson is
pedestrian in his approach, Cortot is so immaginative.
