Not just any ol' S-A-C-D, but Super High Material Super Audio Compact Disc. Assuming the rest of the tetralogy will follow in due time. The last transfers were effected in 1997 by Jimmy Lock of Decca. The 2012 Solti anniversary Ring boxed set used the 1997 masters. And the 2009 Esoteric SACD box was likewise created using same masters. Exciting development!

You heard it here _first_.

From cdjapan-dot-co-dot-jp:

<< This Japanese edition exclusively features SHM-SACD format (single layer). Green color label coating. Slipcase packaging faithfully replicating its original LP artwork. Comes with a booklet.

This release is the one from the major project commemorating the 110th anniversary of the birth and 25th anniversary of the death of Sir Georg Solti, the conductor who was responsible for the project to record the complete studio recording of Wagner's great work "Der Ring des Nibelungen." The first ever complete studio recording of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" completed by Solti between 1958 and 1965 will be released from November 2022 to May 2023.

This 2022 release uses DSD masters produced in 2022 from the original 1958 stereo master tapes. Directed by Andrew Wedman, formerly of Emil Berliner Studios, the tapes were tuned with a Studer A820 machine, a Weiss analog-to-digital converter, and a proprietary workstation that records the output. Some of the 38 original master tapes, the oldest of which were 65 years old, were in need of editorial repair and oxide stripping. The tapes in poor condition were successfully restored, and mastered anew at 24-bit/192 kHz high resolution. Mastering was done by DECCA engineer Philip Siney. >>

No amount of digital audio processing can turn
Wagner's Nazi shit into music. You should really
see a therapist ASAP to be treated for Wagner
paranoia.

I never bought this when it was on LP although I remember going into Discount
Records in Ann Arbor several times to do so, only to put it back because it
was a little pricey for a college student :). But later on, I got the whole
set on CD and it is still in my collection. I love those recordings for both
the singing and conducting by Solti. Will always be one of my favorites. I
had tickets for a Ring performance with the Lyric Opera of Chicago a couple
of years ago, but it was canceled due to Covid. I’m hoping that it will be
revived at some point in the future.

I eventually took the plunge when I found European pressings for cheap
but I've only heard it on Spotify!

Seeing the Ring in San Francisco was a musical high point even if the
subtleties were beyond the young me. Hearing the work with as fine a
cast as could be hoped for and learning to focus for operatic length
were good things. A prof joked that Rheingold was a test to see if you
could handle the rest of the cycle.

There is a global release too. See soltiring.com.
Hybrid SACD and LP releases of each opera plus a Blu-Ray release of the whole thing, with Dolby Atmos mix.
Streaming and Download too.
Single SACD of highlights out this month.

Lord knows why anyone would buy the SHAM SACD Japanese version.

I hope this Dolby Atmos tampering doesn't mess things up. When DGG
released Bernstein's Mahler symphony videos on DVD they remixed the
audio into DTS which was a big botch-up. At least the videos retained
an audio track which is sort of "normal."

The Highlights album has been released on AppleMusic. A quick survey reveals a great leap forward in vividness, clarity and bit-depth resolution. VPO brass sounding finer and more 'metal' than ever before; Nilsson singing for all her life in the Götterdämmerung Immolation Scene. Can't wait for the whole enchilada to drop next month. Wow!

The highlights album is on Amazon also:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BB3FS23G/ref=dm_rwp_pur_lnd_albm_hd

For a mere 29.98 the SACD can be preordered for delivery Nov 11. I did a
quick comparison and Oscar is right - the sound is clearer, particularly
the brass. Whether it is worth replacing my current version I'm NotSure..

There is def some compression going on here. I have listened to it the past 3 days in the car in L.A. traffic, no problemo. Still think it sounds good, but yes, was wondering this morning, "How are these waveforms going to look?"

I have ordered the actual SACD so I'll see how that sounds. All I know is I have never heard this Ring sound this good and I have had all of the various incarnations. I'll leave others to knowledgably discuss the technical aspects, in the end it all depends how it sounds to me and so far it sounds really good. Can't wait for the CD. Randy
