Another National Gramophonic Society rarity this time: the first
recording of Elgar's Piano Quintet in A Minor, Op. 84, featuring Ethel
Hobday with the Spencer Dyke String Quartet. This was recorded by
Vocalion in December 1925, and released on five NGS records - NN, OO,
PP, QQ, and RR, a very nice copy of which I obtained in 2001 from
Raymond Glaspole.
Compton Mackenzie proposed that Elgar himself should play the piano on
this recording, but the composer refused this invitation, replying, "I
never play the pianoforte - I scramble through things orchestrally in
a way that would madden with envy all existing pianists." Elgar
recommended Ethel Hobday for the recording, and indeed she does a fine
job with this very exacting piano part.

My God, man, what DON'T you have on National Gramophonic Society
issues???
Wonderful stuff, as always. I had no idea that Mackenzie approached
Elgar to participate in these sides.

Wonderful, for sure! This is an historical Elgar recording that
somehow has escaped ever being reissued on CD, despite the existence of
five volumes (7 CDs total) so far of really obscure early Elgar recordings?
Any more Elgar? Heck, let's not be specialized. Any more ANYTHING? 8^P
