Allow me to second that vote, and throw in a nomination for the classic
Beecham performance on EMI, which has very good sound and a real epic
swagger to the performance.
John
Beecham, Stokowski, Monteux, Ansermet (first two movements), Muti,
Kondrashin, Svetlanov (most of the way), Reiner, and, as I trust the
tastes of those who've so far responded, Mackerras, though the latter is
probably too newish for me to have heard.
I'm no audiophile, so the sound might be on the old side for you on most
of these, but many of them are the proverbial "classics of the
catalogue."

And let me add Silvestri with that fierce finale.
Might I add to this fine list Loris Tjeknavorian's rather exotic and
appropriately Oriental-sounding version on ASV, coupled with R-K's Fairy Tale
(Skazka), Sadko, and Song of India?
Marc Perman
I think the version with Jansons has the pairing you are looking for. The
performance is very good, as well, though I do prefer Reiner.

I hope Philips will reissue Markevitch's early '60's recording. Once available
with a more stunning account of the R-K's Capriccio (which was once available
on a budget Philips collection).

They've all missed the boat! I recommend Ormandy/Philadelphia
orchestra on SONYbudget. Excellent scheharazade performance and
outstanding Capricio Espangnol!
Haven't heard his Scheherazade...but the Spanish Caprice IS outstanding!

As a matter of fact, I still have my old, old lp of the Ormandy - which I can
recommend with enthusiasm. BUT Ormandy's account Capriccio is completely
inadequate. That's peculiar being that he normally shines in these types of
pieces.
Brthe...@aol.com (John Blair)
The first Ormandy mono LP of Scheherezade, with Hilsberg as
concertmaster, is one of the great curios. Columbia used to add a
slight amount of reverb to their recordings by putting a loudspeaker
and microphone at opposite ends of a locked stairwell in their office
building. One day a dog got trapped in the stairwell, and if you turn
the volume all the way up during the final violin solo, you can
distinctly hear the dog barking to be let out.

Which is coupled with an equally astonishing "La Mer".
