I'm going be in Santa Monica, Calif., around the Memorial Day holiday
weekend to attend a family wedding. Are there any new or used CD
shops in or near the main touristy area near the beach that are
especially worth a visit?

Record Surplus is a few miles inland on Pico.

Is that odd Starbucks/record store hybrid ("Hear Music" or something
similar) still on the Third
Street Promenade, or am I thinking about Lincoln Road in Miami, or
both? Either way it's not worth visiting,
except for the iced mochas.

There's a Second Spin at Wilshire and 14th that sells used CDs and DVDs. It
doesn't have a very big classical section,
though. The best place on the promenade for CDs is the Barnes & Noble, at
3rd and Wilshire.

Record Surplus mentioned below has a fairly big classical section.

Pretty poor, last time I was there -- lots of dross and krossover krap, and
what little "good stuff" I've ever seen there is overpriced. I did pick up
Klee's recordings of "Die Lustiger Weiber von Windsor" there once, however.

Indeed. And it's also worth going a few more miles, into Hollywood, for a
visit to Amoeba Music.

There used to be a whole bunch of good places to shop for classical music
in Santa Monica. It's pretty much dead, now, and the paucity of parking
spaces is especially unwelcoming. They don't want my car, they don't get
my money.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. This visit to Santa Monica is going
to be really quick and highly scheduled, and I won't have a rental
car, so my shopping will probably be restricted to the promenade area
and close environs.

A shame. There used to be lots of worthwhile places, all gone now. I hope
your trip is enjoyable in other ways.
