. . . only among the CDs listed at Berkshire, please:
One "dead" conductor I've neglected (only have heard some French music LPs
a dozen of years ago) and would like to sample better.

Most of that stuff is pirated material, which may not bother you as much as it
does me. The one disc I would recommend very enthusiastically is the first one
listed:
Ravel, Bolero; La Valse. Honegger, Pacific 231. Dukas, Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Chabrier, Espana. Debussy, La Mer. (L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande/ Ansermet)
The Faure Requiem is also very good but sonically faded, but if you like the
work Decca has finally released his Pelleas et Melisande at mid-price and it's
really special.
Some other titles to look for:
Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (with an organ tossed in at the end)
Magnard: Symphony No. 3
Stravinsky: Symphonies (in C, in Three Movements)
Any Debussy or Ravel
In any case, if the above disc turns you on, then there's plenty of other stuff,
though I would be far more selective than some others in this group because the
quality of the the orchestra varied wildly over the years.
In general, if you like, say, van Beinum, you'll find much that's similar in
Ansermet.

A few more items I thought of:
Honegger: Symphonies 2-4 plus King David
Rimsky-Korsakov: Opera suites, plus a terrific Russian Easter Overture
Falla: Three-Cornered Hat (stereo version)
It's interesting looking this over--I have just about everything Ansermet did
(and dearly wish his Pizzetti disc had been issued on CD--that's a collector's
item), and though the orchestra was often pretty second rate, and he's seldom a
first choice for most repertoire, even French stuff, he's one of those
conductors who is almost always so enjoyable anyway that you don't want to
"decollect" him. There's something very musical and sane about his work that I
find very appealing.

Very well said. I would only add that the sound of most of Decca's Victoria
Hall recordings is extremely good, so the Ansermet recordings provide a great
deal of sheerly sonic pleasure as well.

I picked up Ansermet's Chausson symphony, coupled with Penelope and Peleas
et Melisande on an Eloquence recently, (also including the Dukas Sorcercer's
Apprentice), and what a great conductor was Ansermet on the evidence of this
CD.
So much passion (just list to Penelope by Fauré), combined with such a
classical approach, and I hadn't really expected it, having mostly known
Ansermet from his Ravel, and his Beethoven.
The sound is quite respectable too imo.

What do you think of his recording of Borodin's 2d symphony (et al.)?

"You go on playing Bach your way, and I'll go on playing him *his* way."

Danco's recording of Ravel Scheherezade is one of the best. I expect
that Dutton's transfer would be better than Lys' (I have it on
vinyl).
I haven't played Ansermet's recording of the Faure Requiem for many
years. The last time I did I heard some of the worst choral singing
ever preserved on disc. Unforgettable and IMO unforgivable.

I have to agree with Richard about the choral singing on Ansermet's
Faure Requiem; it is absolutely atrocious. In addition, I find that
Danco (a fine singer in other contexts) is somewhat strained in her solos.
Souzay is fine, but the disk is worth keeping only for orchestral music
on it, not for the Requiem.
(Aside to Samir: I'm in the Champaign-Urbana area and would be willing
to loan you this disk. Contact me via email if you're interested.)

I would cheat and have a joint number one: it would be Beethoven 2 and
Russian Easter Festival Orchestra. Okay, I have limited knowledge of
recordings but they are the two best performances of both works I have
heard on a recording.
