SIR HAMILTON HARTY TAPES
Herber Hamilton Harty was born in Hilllsborogugh, Country Down, Ireland,
on 1879.12.4. His father was the organist of the Episcopal Church in
Hillsborough, and his mother an excellent violinist. In 1920 he was
appointed permanent conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, where he remained
head until 1933. He was knighted in 1925. Chicagor critic Eugene Stimson
wrote, Persuasiveness in music can scarcely rise to a greater degree than
it does in his case. And all his persuasiveness is well fortified by the
soundest musical judgment, the most unspoiled and eager outlook, the most
inexhaustible energy of execution." He died in Brighton, England, on
1941.2.19.
(These tapes by no means complete include all of Harty's recordings, but I
think nearly all those he did as a conductor are here. However there are a
number of recordings of Harty at the piano. Only one is included, the
first recrdoing of the Brahms Clarinet Trio. Others include single discs.
Le Grand Baton, JOurnal of the Sir Thomas Beecham Society, published an
excellent discography by Charles Niss in Vol. 23, No. 2, Whole Number 61.
Also, at the end, I add twelve from CHARM
