I don't read the Gramophone but I've just had an email from them including
this link to "50 of the greatest pianists on record" which may be of
interest to some of you and lead to a little dissent :-)

Sorry for the length of that URL, I've tried shortening it but that failed!

A "little" dissent?
Who are you kidding?
The list is completely idiotic!

Imogen Cooper ?!?
Angela Hewitt ?!?
Moron Perahia ?!?
La Wang ?!?

While no mention of
Sofronitsky, Cziffra,
Carlo Zecchi, Ernst
Levy, Maryla Jonas?

Whoever compiled
this list is completely
deaf, dumb, blind and
a brainfucked imbecile.

No Bang Bang? I am appalled and shall write an angry letter to the

"We've chosen 50 of our favourite pianists for this list and could
have easily chosen dozens more, yet we feel sure that there are enough
life-changing recordings here to act as a good beginner's guide to the
world of classical piano music. The list is arranged alphabetically
and we have only recommended recordings that are widely available
today".

So the apoplectic response from the expected source was not justified.

The real idiocy is the idea that great pianists (or composers or conductors or whatever) come conveniently in numbers divisible by ten

Agreed. Prime numbers are better. The absolute best 17 of anything should be hors concours but funny numbers frighten some people.

Let's not exclude halves.... there are plenty of pianists only half deserving to be on the list

Gramophone vindicates itself by their wording ‘50 of the Greatest Pianists”. They’re not claiming that these are the only great ones, or that the list stops where they stop. Having said that, food fights ARE fun.

There is one prominent poster here who will see all his favorites listed when Gramophone compiles a list of “Favorite Cult Pianists”. I’ll let you guess who that is.

No Philippe Entremont?? No Liberace? Victor Borge?

We're never going to get even a whiff of a cult musician from the Blandophone........

There are certainly some artists on this list, fine as they are, whom I find less worthy of being termed "great" than Leon Fleisher and Charles Rosen. The omission of Annie Fischer, however, is inexcusable, and that of Artur Schnabel, incomprehensible.

One can just imagine the late-night conferences and bitter debates that resulted in Sergei Rachmaninov being bumped in favor of Bertrand Chamayou! Is he somebody's son-in-law?
